THE ROOKIE: Deric Augustine Previews Miles’ Reunion with Seth

When THE ROOKIE’s seventh season kicked off, Mid-Wilshire got two new rookies: Miles (Deric Augustine), a Texan transfer, and Seth (Patrick Keleher), who was very inexperienced and seemed to be in over his head.

Though Miles and Seth bonded, things were far more tense with Seth’s training officer: Lucy (Melissa O’Neil) was initially sympathetic to Seth’s tragic backstory—including the fact he said he was currently battling cancer—but his stories didn’t quite add up.

After one too many suspicious tales, Lucy recruited Grey (Richard T. Jones) and Tim (Eric Winter) to help, and gave Seth a choice: Take a blood test to prove he was currently being treated for cancer or refuse and be dismissed from the LAPD training program. (He would also be dismissed if the results came back and showed he had lied about the cancer.) Seth refused and was seemingly exiled from the program.

But Seth is back in the training program on the Tuesday, April 29 episode, “The Return.” And with his return comes complicated feelings for Miles.

“Well, we see in the first episode [of the season], Miles comes off as very bravado and very unhumble, unmeek—but he has a soft spot for Seth,” Augustine tells Give Me My Remote in the video below. “We can see in that first glimpse of him and Seth, how he gives him advice…and took him under his wing and looked at Seth as his brother…And I think when he finds out that Seth was lying, Miles is very, very hurt by that. He’s been very, very much hurt because he feels like his brother lied to him, his little brother lied to him, his partner lied to him.”

Whether Seth can actually stick around in the LAPD training program is still very much TBD—the cops certainly seem sure he won’t last long in the promo for the hour—but Miles will potentially get some peace with his former friend.

“You’ll see Miles finally have this kind of resolution with Seth, and you’ll see what we go through,” Augustine teases. “And the audience is going to really, really be excited about that—[to] have this type of closure that Miles is going to have.”
