Let’s talk about Sunday night’s TV!
AMERICAN IDOL: A solid night. I don’t know if anyone was jaw-droppingly fantastic—outside of, perhaps, Filo—but it was good and enjoyable.
For me, one of the standouts was Slater Nalley’s “Your Song” which actually felt memorable and potentially season-changing for him. The downside to these live shows is that fans kind of have to vote based on previous performances versus shockingly good (or bad) performances night-of.
THE SIMPSONS: The show has done a lot (a lot) of baseball-centric episodes, but it always makes me happy when they dive back into the world. My immediate thought about the episode is that I actually can’t wait to rewatch it because the sheer number of stadium advertising signs I know I missed means I know I missed probably half of the jokes in the episode.
FAMILY GUY: The parodies were fine/good, but nothing made me laugh as hard as the Quibi silence got when the show was paying tribute to the fallen streaming services.
THE LAST OF US: Oh my God, what an absolutely brutal opening. Tommy with Joel’s body was bad enough—I’m both relieved and slightly disappointed we didn’t see Jackson find out about Joel’s death—but then Ellie’s screams? Haunting, chilling, deeply distressing.
But somehow it got worse! (I mean that as praise.) Ellie going through Joel’s home and finally crying while seeking comfort from his jacket? My goodness. Bella Ramsey was stunning as they showcased Ellie’s grief. (And the coffee beans at Joel’s grave site? Ow.)
I’m curious how the show will split its time for the rest of the season: Will we be toggling back and forth between Jackson, Ellie and Dina, the Scars, and Abby? I’m not sure if the Scars scene (at least with them being alive) was as effective here as a non-game player, but I am curious to see where it goes.
THE GREAT NORTH: Aw, well, at least Judy and Beef tried to cheer up Ham, even if it was…maybe a little too much. (Though I’m with Ham: Rewatching something you love to feel better seems like a good mode of coping with life.)
And a literal laugh-out-loud moment when Wolf ate the worm-looking pasta. Hey, if it’s delicious and free, I get it. I might have noticed everyone staring and taking photos/videos, though. (Poor Honeybee.)
THE EQUALIZER: Well, this was a fantastic episode.
First of all, I got so, so, so emotional over the montage of Delilah growing up. Ow?!?
But, importantly, as we approach the end of the season—and it’s still TBD about whether it’ll be the end of the show—a lot of pieces are falling into place to show where they may end up. D has the option to go to CA if she wants. James and Dante have started down the path of something approaching brotherhood. (It might always be tense for them! But James going to Dante for help and seeing what he can/will do was huge. As was James agreeing to come meet his nephews.)
It’s also nice Dante/Robyn have slipped so easily into their romantic relationship and are actually making an effort to enjoy this (figurative) honeymoon phase after circling each other for so long. Of course, even a trip away together wouldn’t stop the duo from being targeted, but I guess that’s a problem they/we will have to deal with next week.
THE $100,000 PYRAMID: Wow, D.L. Hughley was so good at this game, even at things I thought might be impossible to give clues to. (Things that flow?!)
