About Last Night…AMERICAN IDOL, THE VOICE, and YES, CHEF!

Let’s talk about Monday night’s TV!

AMERICAN IDOL: Really, America?! Yikes. I actually thought Ché was great with “Dancing On My Own,” but it feels wildly inexcusable that Filo was eliminated. I’ve liked Mattie pretty consistently, but “Because of You” was very, very, very, very rough; Breanna Nix also had a really rough night. Truly disappointing results.

THE VOICE: It’s so hard to lose 60% of the contestants (on these teams), and I genuinely don’t know if any combination of people moving forward would have felt correct. There also wasn’t a jaw-dropping, undeniable, standout performance, which is both good and bad. We’ll see how next week’s group handles things. 

YES, CHEF!: I went into this with no previous awareness of the chefs, but also intrigued by the concept: We so often see problematic personalities emerge on competition shows, but normally it’s juxtaposed with nicer people. This had everyone being problematic in some sense—at least to the effect that it was hurting what they could accomplish in the kitchen—and I’m curious to see if some people actually do change as the season progresses.

The first episode, well, Katsuji didn’t impress me. His decision to veto his team’s menu and tank their chances was selfish. And then he took the meat so Michelle couldn’t use it? I wish she had swapped proteins and beaten him. Or that Katsuji gets a personality transplant.
