ST. DENIS MEDICAL and THE ROOKIE

THE ROOKIE – “The Return” – The team has mixed feelings when a familiar face returns hoping to prove himself. Meanwhile, an influencer gets his fans to come after Wesley, and Tim supports Lucy as she prepares for the sergeant’s exam. TUESDAY, APRIL 29 (9:00-10:01 p.m. EDT) on ABC. (Disney/Mike Taing)

Let’s talk about Tuesday night’s TV!

ST. DENIS MEDICAL: I spent so much of the episode dreading what felt inevitable: Alex picking her work over Tim, and him (FAIRLY!) getting so frustrated that it caused some big kind of chasm in their marriage. Instead, he was great about it; resigned and sad, but still supportive. And then she did the right thing and went to him. What a delightful surprise! (Sincerely.)

It was also hilarious that everyone called out Serena for being oblivious to Matt’s feelings toward her. It’ll be interesting to see how she reacts/handles things next season.

THE ROOKIE: Well, I saw basically none of this episode coming. First of all, I cannot believe Tamara was still dating Seth. What?! I know she’s young, but yikes.

And then the dinner from hell. Even if Lucy hadn’t spotted the ring, there was just so much awkwardness at one table. (Though Celina and Rodge have grown to be very funny together.)

But then it all went up in flames, anyway. That shootout was absolutely brutal, and Seth’s wailing in pain when his leg was shot was just…awful. Seth obviously did bad things, but even he didn’t deserve that. (The breakup with Tamara? Absolutely. He had that coming.)

I am curious about what, if anything, the show will do with Seth going forward. We saw his first steps of honesty, but was that enough to indicate he’ll be on the right path going forward and it’s up to us to decide if he opts to stay a cop? Do they want to show that redemption arc? I guess we’ll find out in season 8. (Or beyond.)

(Okay, the Miles and Seth fight also made me laugh out loud. Miles was right to be angry and hurt, but I was surprised he actually let his emotions get the better of him.)

Also, Angela remains an absolutely freaking badass. It’s awful she and her son were stalked at the park by social media stans, but she handled it like a freaking pro, both by herself and when she got backup to help her out.

Chenford also seems like a big question mark right now. Lucy is (hopefully) on the verge of a promotion, which would clear the way to make some of their issues easier. Like she said—and this is important, both for her and for them—she didn’t take this step for their potential relationship. But. It also feels undeniable it’s also a factor; or, at the very least, a bonus. We know a drugged Lucy said she already forgave him. So what’s next when this professional obstacle if (hopefully) no longer an issue?
