ELSBETH Kaya exit

“Toil and Trouble” – Elsbeth is thrown into the world of television after the showrunner of a long-running police procedural is brutally murdered in his office, and although it appears to be the act of a disgruntled fan, she begins to suspect the show’s longtime star Regina Coburn (Laurie Metcalf) who yearns for artistic fulfillment. Meanwhile, Judge Crawford (Michael Emerson) continues to be a thorn in Elsbeth’s side, on the CBS original series ELSBETH, Thursday, Dec. 19 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+ (live and on demand for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, or on demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day after the episode airs)* Pictured (L-R): Carra Patterson as Kaya Blanke and Carrie Preston as Elsbeth Tascioni Photo: Michael Parmelee/CBS ©2024 CBS Broadcasting, Inc. When ELSBETH returns for its third season, it’ll be down an original cast member: Carra Patterson, who has played Kaya on the CBS series since the show’s pilot (and frequently has been the partner of Carrie Preston’s Elsbeth), will exit as a series regular at the end of season 2.

Though Patterson will return in the future as a guest star, showrunner Jonathan Tolins acknowledges he doesn’t know how often that might be.

“I don’t really have the answer, other than to say that the character is absolutely still part of the ELSBETH world,” he tells Give Me My Remote. “We love Carra, we love Kaya, and we’re gonna have her on as often as we can.”

The series has utilized a rotating team of law enforcement workers who worked with Elsbeth and Kaya on cases—but Kaya won’t be joining those ranks. “I do think, because the character is so important, it will be special every time she comes in,” Tolins notes. “I don’t think it’ll just be a situation where Kaya is just like one of the rotating detectives.”

Outside of Elsbeth and Kaya being close friends and partners in- rime-solving, Kaya also served to ground her friend at points. With the writers’ room not opening for a few weeks, Tolins said “we’ll see” whether that absence leaves Elsbeth a little less tethered or other characters step in to ground her more.

But “I do think that some of that also comes from Wendell as Captain Wagner,” Tolins points out. “I think we may see him play a bit more of a role in that way. And we really enjoyed having him kind of out in the field in the last few episodes, and we might do more of that.”

“We did that in 2×18, [where Elsbeth and Wagner] went to Cape Cod [to investigate Crawford], and we really enjoyed that,” he continues. “So I think that we’ll probably find more opportunities to have them working together out of the office.”

ELSBETH, Thursdays, 9/8c, CBS
