CHICAGO P.D.’s Intelligence Unit enters the Wednesday, May 21 season 12 finale facing one of their biggest tests ever: They’ve been disbanded, thanks to Reid (Shawn Hatosy), with Burgess (Marina Squerciati) losing her badge and Torres (Benjamin Levy Aguilar) in jail.

“It’s gonna be a struggle; it’s gonna be definitely a struggle,” CHICAGO P.D. showrunner Gwen Sigan tells Give Me My Remote. “We’ll kind of come right back up in the finale and see what that really looks like when you’re basically stripped and your unit is disassembled. And see what that effect has on Voight. This is the closest he’s ever come to losing the entire unit.”

“The whole episode is really built around, ‘Can he find a way to get out of this?’” she continues. “And then really that question of, ‘What are the moral costs of it? And is he willing to get into the dirt with Reid, this person that he keeps claiming he’s nothing like, or is he willing to suffer the cost of potentially losing the unit and losing this sort of idea of protection for the city that he thinks he represents?’ So it’s a high-octane adrenaline ride, with a lot of emotional stakes, too.”

Most notable is the Burgess and Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) wedding, which is right around the corner when Intelligence gets imploded.

“It’s just been such a long time coming, right?” Sigan points out. “I mean, 12 years, three engagements, babies in between. Like, so many things that these two people have gone through. So it’s almost felt like this sort of gut punch. For Burgess, to get her badge taken a week before the wedding, feels like, ‘This is not the way I want to get married. I want to be happy. I want to be able to enjoy it. I have waited so long for this moment and we’ve gone through so much. Then, suddenly, I’m going to be there also thinking about, am I losing this job that means the world to me?’”

“So I think that emotional place is really interesting, because it’s not what either of them wanted for that day and not the feelings that they wanted to bring into it,” she continues. “And so it will bring up a question of, ‘Is this how we want to do this? Is this really what we want at this time, or do we wait?’ We’ll pose all of those questions in the finale.”

Of course, there are photos of a wedding ceremony (officially) out there. Without spoiling any specifics about why and how Burzek might end up there, Sigan reiterates that the writers spent a lot of time talking about what kind of wedding the off-on couple might have.

“What we really wanted was [for] it to be a real wedding,” Sigan says. “On this show, we’ve never really done that; we’ve always had ‘we go to court and get married’-type of thing. For these two individuals, they really would have wanted that [traditional wedding]. They would have wanted to have the dress, and it be a really beautiful event with all their loved ones. And also still be them.”

“So I think where we came out was sort of traditional, but simple and understated,” she continues. “It wasn’t too formal and stuffy. Just really…I mean, you can see from the pictures a lot of golden light. It’s a very, I think, sweet wedding. It felt like the two of them.”
