LOVE ISLAND USA, THE TONY AWARDS, and HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREET

The original Broadway cast of “Hamilton” performs at THE 78TH ANNUAL TONY AWARDS, live from the legendary Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Sunday, June 8 (8:00-11:00 PM, LIVE ET/5:00-8:00 PM, LIVE PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+. Let’s talk about Sunday night’s TV!

LOVE ISLAND USA: I really dislike we lost a girl this week given one girl was already booted from the villa. Sigh.

Nic spoiling his pick was hilarious, but wow to the (understandable) drama/pain that played out on Belle-A’s face when he mentioned the photo booth and she knew she was going home. I’m glad Cierra was lovely about it and also acknowledged how difficult this was on Belle-A, too.

(Huda and Jeremiah are not going to end well at all.)

THE TONY AWARDS: There were a bunch of genuinely lovely speeches, but nothing got me as emotional as the HAMILTON mashup and then the “In Memoriam.” I did not expect to cry so much, my goodness.

HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREET: “Hostage, Part 1”: Wow, we started off the season with an exposition dump: Megan is pregnant?! And gone? Oy. But oh my God, the sexism and racism as they’re discussing Megan and Frank sucks. (Not surprising, especially at that time, but oy.)

Every time I come back to the show, though, I’m struck again by the monumental loss of Andre Braugher. I had seen so much of his work beyond this before his death (and covered BROOKLYN NINE-NINE during its run), but my goodness, the work he did here was really next level. We’re so used to seeing Frank in control of everything that his not being able to utilize his body the way he wants, say the correct words—it’s genuinely jarring. Braugher was so incredible at portraying every beat of that.

I also loved the camera work when Frank returned to the station and the stairs appeared longer when he approached them.

This is also an episode that hits differently, I imagine in 2025 versus the mid-’90s when it first aired, because school shootings are (horrifically) more normalized. But the young girl being relieved she saw cameras because she thought that meant it must be a movie and wasn’t really happening…oh my God. It makes so much sense and was just chilling.

“Hostage, Part 2”: Yeah, I’m officially worried about Frank. His frustration, grief, and anger makes sense, but lashing out at the people who love him is not good and could be super dangerous. And now that he flushed the pills? Oy. I’m worried to see where he goes next, physically and emotionally.

It was also haunting to see the paramedics (understandably) deal with the in-need hostage-taker first because he was so dire until Al started raging and insisted on them helping a wounded girl instead. (Good for him.)

Also, uh, Danvers is engaged?!
