BONES: Michaela Conlin Talks Baby Hodgela

March 24, 2011 by

While there is no new episode of BONES airing tonight, last Thursday’s hour gave fans plenty to think about, right?

I recently caught up with BONES star Michaela Conlin (Angela) and we talked about filming “The Blackout in the Blizzard,” being in the dark on baby-related matters and if she has a gender preference for Baby Hodgela…

First of all, I have to say that Angela and Hodgins had me crying during their scenes in “The Blackout in the Blizzard.”
Michaela Conlin:
Aww, that’s really nice! TJ [Thyne (Hodgins)] did a really beautiful job with that. I thought David [Boreanaz (Booth)] did an amazing job with [directing] the episode.

Have you seen the finished hour?
MC: Yes. Well, truth be told, I saw part of it. I didn’t watch all of it, I saw the first half.

Did you get a chance to see the scene where Hodgins and Angela discussed his test results as Wendell observed them?
MC: Yes, I did see that scene. Yeah. It’s bad.

Was there actually dialogue written there or was it always intended to have us not know what they were saying?
MC: Oh, that’s a good question. No, there was no dialogue there, so we just improvised and talked to each other. It was a tough scene to shoot for sure. A tough scene to shoot.

Do you know if the baby is going to be blind?
MC: I don’t know that. I actually don’t know when I’m giving birth, how I’m giving birth, where I’m giving birth…these are all things I haven’t been able to ask [BONES creator] Hart [Hanson]. [Laughs] Because I haven’t seen him! We’ve been missing each other. We’re like ships in the night. And there’s part of me that wants to keep it a little bit of a surprise. Honestly. I’m not lying to you. Just because what fun is it [to know], right?

No, I understand the desire to keep it a surprise. Speaking of surprises, do you know if the baby is a boy or a girl?
MC: No, I don’t know, but I feel like there have been more — and I’m sure the fans can agree with this — references of it being a boy, but maybe someone just said that in my head early on.

Well, there’s also a certain character in an upcoming episode that thinks the baby is a boy…
MC: That’s right! Thank you. I knew you would know. [Laughs] I knew someone put it in my head. But also, before that, maybe Hodgins referenced it [being a boy]? Obviously I would love it to be — I have a penchant for girls. But I’m sure if the baby is healthy, Angela won’t care.

What do you think? Is Baby Hodgela a boy or a girl?

The episode where Jack & Angela were looking at baby Hodgins with an ultrasound, Angela’s first comment started “she.” I think their baby will be Katherine Temperance!

  2. Katherine Knight on March 24th, 2011 5:36 pm

I hope it is a girl. Cause my name is Katherine and that would just be so cool. Plus I think Hodgela suit having a girl, she would be really smart and sciency cause of Hodgins, but really creative and fashionable cause of Angela. And have a well grounded personality due to both of them. I can just imagine her being one of those girls in school who is really pretty and popular, and also getting A+ but you can’t hate her cause she’s also really nice.

Well I’m partial to girls, and I can so see Angela raising a girl and Hodgins being completely and utterly in love with his little girl and wrapped around her finger. But of course little boys are wonderful too. Seeing as HH has two sons, I would bet that he would just naturally tend to think in terms of a boy… but it’s fun waiting and watching.

I think last weeks episode was so good in so many ways. It’s completely erased all of my sour feelings from this season so far, and I absolutely loved all of the dialogue and scenes with all fo the characters th\is week. Booth and Brennan admitting that what they really want is to be ready … That was amazing. Even if they aren’t ready yet…they both want to be, and they both know that they both want to be…so anything that happens between them from this point forward happens with that in mind…. Which makes every interaction so much more meaningful.

TJ deserves an Emmy for his performance… and David shows us that he’s probably the number 1 Director that most Loves and Honors those characters . I’m so on the Happy Bones Wagon again!

Love Angela even when she’s behaving in a way that I don’t like, and I thought the baby plot was too cheap or melodramatic. That said, the secondary characters are the only reason I’m still watching. I’m actively hoping the producers get their wish and Booth and Bones never get together till the last episode, since I know realistically, BB is the endgame.

And please, there’s no way the viewer would recognize the director without the press. It’s PR and fans who play straight into PR hands annoy me because the squeeing has been letting the show get away with such lesser storytelling.

  5. TY on March 24th, 2011 10:53 pm

It’s pathetic I still watch out of habit, but I was actually glad there was no new Bones to disappoint or annoy me this week. On the BB front, I just wish the show would let them be. This season is proof they’re not good at the other drama, so go back to your roots to crime solving and bring back the likable versions of the main characters.

Angela has done some dumb things on the show, but she was good, nicely understated, in the last episode. Still don’t need any more baby drama though. Agree with above comment that it’s cheap. It’s just a way to try to get our interests while they drag out the shipper nonsense, but we all know nothing’s actually going to happen to the precious Jeffersonian baby.

Michaela did an awesome job last week not overplaying the drama. It’s nice to see Angela in a different light and me and my hubby are looking forward to seeing them deal with being parents!

  7. Uncle J on March 25th, 2011 3:06 pm

I don’t know why the show is intent on creating more problems instead of fixing the ones they already have.

  8. sarah on March 25th, 2011 4:09 pm

this show should admit the mistakes of hannah/and bones even setting their like she was even thinking about going to bed with him is another mistakes/reckon jack tatoo is why his test could be wrong?

  9. Brooklyne on March 25th, 2011 4:41 pm

For some reason, I have to guess that it will be a boy. I don’t know why but I believe if they had a boy, they would make a great family.

  10. Jeanette on March 25th, 2011 4:44 pm

I love Bones and look forward to every episode…I am hoping the writer will write in twins.. a boy and a girl…(my dad was a twin and had a twin sister) I think it would add a super twist to things. I also hope to one day again soon see the cast of Bones at Comic-Con in San Diego again..
    Keep up the fantastic work.
    A devoted fan.

  11. Jessica on March 25th, 2011 4:44 pm

I think it is going to be a girl because I can see them thinking it is going to be a boy and in the end it is a girl. I’ll be happy either way though.

  12. Jacquie on March 25th, 2011 4:45 pm

Twins. A boy and a girl!

  13. Someone Who LOVES This Show on March 25th, 2011 4:49 pm

Well I always knew something bad was going to happen with their kid, though i was guessing something worse (and still am a little). But my favourite part of the last episode was the end with Hodgins comforting Angela, and I think a girl would be perfect.

  14. Deb on March 25th, 2011 4:55 pm

I just love bones and don’t think they should split booth and bones up but I also think that H and A will have a girl because in there somewhere they will throw Temp in I’m sure but keep up the good work love the show

  15. christina claypoole on March 25th, 2011 4:58 pm

I have to see the belly to c what it is. High belly means boy,low belly means girl

  16. BONES FAN on March 25th, 2011 5:11 pm

I have watched every episode of bones and have now got my hubby into the show and we both think that Angela will have a girl and that Hodges and Angela’s Dad wil spoil her roten.

  17. Erika on March 25th, 2011 5:13 pm

I understand the not caring, and worrying, about your baby. I have a little boy that has special needs times a couple (autistic and has eating problems). I am grateful to the creators for bringing up the chance of having a special needs child. It gives light to all types of special little ones, the heartbreak that comes with the initial diagnosis, and the strength that the couple need to have in each other to make it through the challenges ahead.

  18. sylvia on March 25th, 2011 5:16 pm

i hope they have a boy but that the producers of the show go 1 step further. have a contest 2 name the baby (1st & middle name) & whoever is the winner gets signed dvd’s by the whole cast the season the baby is born. since the baby might b born sick i would like 2 c all cast members & production staff make a small donation 2 a childrens charities.

  19. td on March 25th, 2011 5:18 pm

@Jacquie i totally agree. i at least hope it will be twins

  20. andrea on March 25th, 2011 5:21 pm

matbe should be twins, it would be more fun for angela and hodgins 😀

  21. lu ann buehler on March 25th, 2011 6:13 pm

I agree with Erika as I am a Grandparent to a special needs child. We all expect and pray for a healthy child, but we don’t always get what we want. They are loved and welcomed just as much as typical children. I think it is about time that the entertainment industry shows everyone that this happens and how the family has to cope with what they are given. The degree of needs for my Grandson is great, as he will never talk or walk, but what he has taught me in his short 4 years is tremendous. I really like the end part of the show and that Angela and Hodgins will accept and love the child no matter what.

  22. Eunsoo on March 25th, 2011 6:31 pm

I really hope it’s a girl… For some reason it just seems right.

  23. Catherine on March 25th, 2011 7:15 pm

I am hoping that Hodgins and Angela have twins and that they are beautiful healthy babies. Bones is a terrific show. When is Season 6 coming out.

  24. Marcia on March 25th, 2011 7:49 pm

twins: one of each, and both completely healthy!!!

  25. kate hodgens on March 25th, 2011 8:30 pm

i think that the baby should be a girl

  26. Lauren on March 25th, 2011 9:29 pm

Who cares? I mean no respect to MC who did a good job and always seems lovely. But seriously, nothing’s going to happen to the baby so it’s hard to work up any real emotional response.

Mostly, it’s just frustration at the distraction the writers are setting up instead of dealing with the real mess.

  27. Maureen on March 26th, 2011 8:03 am

I think that the baby will be fine and the writers are using this crisis to try to build drama where it’s really not needed. This baby crisis is subterfuge and a way for the writers and HH to try to make us forget the mess they made of thing with the whole Hannah business this season. I’ve been watching since the beginning of Season 1 and for me the draw is the special chemistry of Brennan/Booth — Emily/David. This is what sets this program apart from the rest. Sure, the cases for the most part are interesting but they are secondary to the BB relationship. It’s that chemistry that draws us to tune in each week.

It would be nice if Angela and Hodgins had twins, a girl and a boy. It would be so cool as they would be named after Brennan (Katherine Temperance) and Booth (Michael Joseph — Seeley’s middle name).

  28. Ginny on March 26th, 2011 7:35 pm

I just love the show and I hope that it is twins (a girl and a boy ).

  29. Rachna on March 27th, 2011 12:30 pm

i hope for twins …. but i have a feeling its going to be a boy …… anyways even if it a girl …. its going to be great….. bones is a great show…. n the director will surely do something interesting to keep the audience curious ….. 🙂

  30. karla on March 27th, 2011 8:15 pm

I think that everyone needs to stop saying that the Hannah thing ruined the show and that they are just trying to make up for it. Everyone in life goes through ups and downs and falls in and out of love, they were apart for almost a year–expet the fact that a romantic like Booth would fall in love.

Now as for Hodgela, I think that storyline is great. Who cares if the baby ends up healthy, they are finally giving storylines with a meaning to the secondary characters who are in my opinion more interesting a fun to watch. Yes BB is great, but nothing will never happen til the last episode…Hodgela however has gone in and out of a relationship, fought through it, gone to the alter twice, and now expecting…semms like a lot more things to talk about then oh my gosh did you see the way Booth just looked at her in last night’s episode.

My opinion is that it is a girl, I’d honestly prefer a boy…not sure why…but the thing that makes me think girl is because of Parker, I’m thinking even distrubution of gender of children, but then again there is Michelle so who the heck knows. I am also hoping for twins as well btw! I also feel the hard times aren’t over, I feel like the sniper will have something to do with it and that maybe Angela will be in a coma or something…idk just thinking out loud.

…sorry for the rude BB comments, it just frustrates me that people consider them the only two on the show and that people have a complete hatred for the Hannah character.

  31. Jackie Pastore on March 28th, 2011 9:20 pm

Just to throw it out there, but I think my baby would be the perfect baby to play as Hodgens and Angela’s baby! He’s half korean and italian and is a good mix of both. Not to mention he’s adorable.

Are any of you old enough to remember “Moonlighting,” which started Bruce Willis and Cybil Shepard? It was smoking hot and trucked right along just like Bones with the sexual tension between the two major characters keeping it going–and once they succumbed, the series was so dead it couldn’t be revived, and that was the end of it. I hope that won’t happen here–but it will.

  34. Bethany on April 6th, 2011 3:21 pm

Aww, I didnt know David directed the last episode! It was wonderful!! I know a lot of people (including me) thought the beginning of this season really sucked, but fortunately it seems that was because of Hannah, now that she’s gone things seem to be getting back to normal -quality wise. I did love the Angela/Hodgins baby scenes, they were adorable! Especially at the end, looking towards making the best of it if the baby is blind! I hope the baby is a girl, I want her to be named after Brennan and I just think Hodgins seems like the dad of a little girl 🙂
