HEROES Redux - Give Me My Remote : Give Me My Remote

HEROES Redux

October 9, 2007 by

Not quite sure what’s going on with HEROES this season. I found last night’s episode to be uneven at best and laugh out loud funny at other times (and that would be me laughing at the show, not with them). What is going on?  I mean, really?

To start with the good – I am enjoying Peter‘s “Bourne Identity” storyline. Maybe because is keeps his shirtless all the time, I’m not sure, but I find it interesting that he’s not sure of all of his powers. One thing he hasn’t lost is his power over the ladies.  Peter may not know who he is but he’s still a stud.  A stud with a tatoo or at least he was until it vanished.  I was confused, can someone better versed in HEROES explain to me the transforming then disappearing tat? Was I supposed to understand that or is it a new mystery?

Sylar isn’t sure he will ever get his powers back and while I hope he doesn’t (I’m all about saving innocent lives) he better soon (interesting TV trumps innocent lives).

The marital spats between Parkman and Mohinder are starting to bore me. Move to Massachusetts, get married, raise Molly together and be done with it. On second thought, maybe Molly and Micah would be better off on their own. These two kids are smarter than the people caring for them.

The less Nikki/Jessica the better, but who did Ali Larter piss off to get so little screen time so far this season?

Maya and her brother could share a little with Ali since they seem to have a pointless storyline. We get it, she can kills people with the black ink coming out of her eyes. This is the third episode where that’s all that happens. They run, she kills, he screams “Maya”, she cries, he comforts her and they’re back on the run. It was interesting the first 400 times we saw it.

Where is Kristen Bell already?

Speaking of another snoozefest, how about the Hiro/Kensei storyline? Come on, give us something new there already! We haven’t moved past what we learned in the first episode of the season which is Kensei is a (good looking) drunk who is not interested in fulfilling his destiny. Ok, ok so we learned that he can heal from his wounds, but dude, who can’t these days?

And since we are talking about healing and all, can we please talk about Clare? I find her one of the more interesting characters on the show because I like how they explore how she is dealing with her “gift” in the real world. But the storyline with the new boy is so contrived. I’m not going to get into it again about how “convenient” (aka lazy) their meeting was because I did that last week. But seriously were you watching when he picked her up and started flying her around? I had to pause the screen and laugh. I was just waiting to hear “Can you read my mind” playing in the background. It could have been that exact scene from Superman…but wait, the CGI effects were better in Superman…yeah the one that came out in 1978. Did HEROES get their budget slashed this week or something? From the horrendous use of green screen in the flying scene, then again in Japan and even with Sylar’s illusion chick I’m not sure what’s going on with Heroes creative team.

Here’s the odd thing…despite me finding last night’s episode more than a bit lackluster I’m no where near dumping it.  I still find HEROES more interesting than half the shows on television.  Now I don’t know if that’s more of a commentary on my love for HEROES or the state of TV today, but either way, although I may bitch and moan and stamp my feet I’m still loving this show.  I’m just waiting for HEROES to pull its act together.

I agree with you 100% the Maya Miguel thing needs to resolve itself and the story needs to progress. I hope things pick up.

I agree with all your points, but mostly the last one. I liked this episode a lot, despite its fault. That’s usually the case with me and this show, though. It’s not perfect television, but it’s usually a fun ride.

Your line about Mohinder and Parkman moving to Massachusetts was spot-on, by the way. Get a room, guys.

Ugh. Maya and Alejandro can go the way of D.L. and Isaac (RIP) for all I care – they bore the crap out of me.

I’m enjoying the Peter storyline and (to a certain extent) the Claire storyline, and I always love as much Sylar as I can get, but the rest I find blah. That’s always been the case with me and this show — I like a few storylines and I sit through the rest. I mostly watch it so I can be in the loop with all my Heroes-loving friends.

Man, Peter’s chest pooping out that bullet was about the grossest thing I’ve ever seen on TV.

These were my thoughts from last night:

hehehehehe I love Sylar!! That was amazing… I’m very easy to please 😉 Just show me Sylar and I’m all good.. but tempt me with Sylar on Sylar action and MY GOD, I LOVE HEROES! His powers aren’t working.. ah! What is he to do?? I’m glad he’s still badass as ever – that makes me very happy – although, I would have liked to have seen him make out with Candace, damn his lack of human emotions! He’s on the island from LOST! Go find Sawyer and fornicate!

Peter’s storyline is meh, but I did enjoy the fact that he can’t say “lightning” and “sparks” with a shirt on 😉 That’s interesting about the tattoo.. what does that mean?? Don’t really care about the twins either.. but I think Claire and West are adorable! It’s not going to be pretty when he meets HRG though, eek. I wonder who is killing the Heroes… and whose the new boogie man?! And why don’t Mohinder and Matt make out already?! They are too cute hehe

Not invested in the Nikki storyline yet…

The Maya storyline could easily have been skipped this week. It was basically a rehash of last episode. They need to get to NY as fast as possible, and I would be all right with skipping them until that happens. However, although I didn’t notice it, ppl on other boards are saying that the car in their storyline was actually Claire’s stolen car.
Peter’s storyline is more interesting, though also treading water.
Silly Candice for letting Sylar get the drop on her. Though it was pretty boneheaded for him to kill her: he lost a big helper, as well as the potential for super awesome (though not exactly real) sex.
I don’t have any real problems with Claire’s story, although I know that I should. Their conversation about eating fire was fun. And her relationship with HRG is probably the best part of the show. Nice ending there, too.
And I also have been having alot of fun with Hiro’s storyline. Except that I would have just fine with him coming back to the future at the end of the episode. I’m not sure where this is going. And I hope that that eventual converge of this story with the others has a nice payoff (didn’t a press release say that Kenzei is immortal or something, and therefore alive in the present?).

I thought last nights episode was really good overall- always fine with seeing more Jess, i mean Peter. I can’t wait to see the confrontation between West and HRG, with Claire in the middle, trying to decide who she trusts, etc, etc. That should make for some good tv. I think that it is not just a coincidence that Claire ended up at the same school as West and that they became friends…but if it is that is a real stretch of a storyline, but I’ll go with it.

Maya and her brother need to do something besides runaway to America and kill people in the process. I know they are trying to go get answers/help but maybe they could fill us audience members in with a little something, anything. But I’m used to this show keeping me in the dark for long periods of time so I’m not going anywhere.

I think slowly all the storylines will start to converge and make much more sense…there are so many questions that need to be answered!

  10. Lisa on October 9th, 2007 3:19 pm

Maya and Miguel need to get to America already. I am really bored watching them every week. I hate Peter’s storyline, he needs to get his memory back and return to his family. I want more Nathan! Nikki’s storyline is so short…and why is she getting herself into a situation where she has to do something for someone else again, doesn’t she know better. Poor Micah! Claire is the only one I am finding interesting lately. West is cool, but he can be a little weird sometimes. Candice was a retard. I think she was just trying to get some. Sylar was awesome, but he needs to get his powers back so something interesting can happen. I am sick of Parkman! I love Mohinder. I really want to see some more Nathan, he is dark and moody and interesting. Plus I want to know more about what happened when Peter blew up last season.

Maybe I’m stupid, but I thought the tattoo disappeared because of the power Peter took from Claire (i.e. healing). I don’t believe there is a deeper meaning or anything.

  12. m on October 9th, 2007 3:35 pm

I agree with silsont- I thought the tattoo disappeared because of Peter’s healing capabilities, although why it focused on the “s” symbol a little longer in the end, I don’t know…

I am with you–the Hiro storyline is killing me! It is so bad.

  14. Ryan on October 9th, 2007 7:55 pm

Hiro went from being the best to the worst character on the show in the later half of last season. His constant whining tone about fullfilling his destiny (or this season Kensei’s) and the not using his power when he should is annoying to me.

Half the time he could go back 5 minutes and fix everything he messed up, but insteads sticks around and wastes 3 or more episodes fixing problems–waitress, killing sylar, ruining kensei’s plan… Sure its a pitfall of having a character that can control time and matter, but its frustrating. I find myself saying to the tv, “Go back 30 seconds ago moron.”

Niki has always been the worst storyline. Less of her the better (despite her general hotness).

I actually find the Maya and her hermano storyline interesting. The slow build up doesn’t bother me. That’s what made the first season of heroes good for me–the slow putting together of the puzzle. Its one thing this season is generally lacking, but may have been recently added with claire’s father impending death. The first season we all knew the world was gonna end and it had to be stopped. We just weren’t sure exactly how it was going to happen. Not really a huge story arch to be resolved this season. Just a bunch of random stuff in a bunch of people’s lives.

Overall I think the show isn’t bad this season. I find myself engaged from start to finish of each episode so far.
