Project BUFFY Update

March 7, 2008 by

For those of you interested in the latest on Project Buffy, I’m happy to report that I’ve finished Season 4 and I’m on to Disc 2 of Season 5. I have until March 20th to finish all seven seasons. The amount of episodes I have still to watch is rather intimidating, but fear not, I will succeed.

I’m loving this show more and more with every episode. I found certain parts of Season 4 a little less interesting than others, but I’ve heard from other BUFFY fans that that seems to be the general consensus. Everyone has told me that the best has yet to come and I couldn’t be more excited.

I’m starting to get some answers to questions I had from back in Season One. Such as how on Earth do Spike and Buffy ever get together? And where the hell did Dawn come from?

Regarding Spike, I never thought I would love another Vamp like I did Angel, but damn if Spike isn’t growing on me. Having known of the character from being a basic pop culture connoisseur, I think I always assumed he was just going to be this dark and mysterious bloke…always brooding. Come to find out he’s the comic relief of the show. Brilliant. I could see Spike and I being good buds (especially as long as the chip stays in tact) – I mean we are both fans of witty banter and the telly…oh and The Creek. Had we met through Match.com I think we’d might be in one of those commercials celebrating our love (again, as long as there’s no biting…well at least not too much).

As for little sis, I was a bit frustrated that it took more than a few episodes into Season 5 before Dawn’s appearance was explained. I knew better than to think we were suppose to accept that she was there all along, but I was so desperate to find out why that I was getting aggravated. In the last ep I watched I got my answer and I am more than satisfied. Welcome, Dawn or should I call you ‘the key’.

Again, I do miss Angel but Riley is filling in just fine in the role of resident eye candy. I dig him, but I fear the union of Buffy and Riley is on shaky ground. I think her role as The Slayer is going to be a little more than this guy can handle.

I’m just starting to warm up to Tara, and it’s a good thing because it’s her birthday. And how much do I love her family. I mean we have her brother (Herc from ‘Friday Night Lights’) and Cousin Beth (Amy Adams, ‘Enchanted’, ‘The Office’). Just starting the episode so they might go bad, but for now, how fun?! I know I’m suppose to be all accepting of Willow and Tara, but I’m not sure I buy it just yet. I see the connection, but love? (Update: Just watched ‘Family’ and I get it now. A great Tara episode). I’ll give it more time. Maybe I’m just a little anti because I love Oz. He’s one of my very favorites. When he came back a few eps back I hoped it would be for good. I mean even if he wasn’t with Willow it would still be nice to have him around. Alas, he’s gone. Maybe to return one day again? Shhh, don’t tell me.

I know that I’ve got a few more seasons of the show ahead of me, but I’m not sure I will see anything as brilliant as the “Hush” episode. I dare say I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a more brilliant hour of television – ever! The Gentleman freaked me out (or as the Scooby Gang would say ‘I was totally wigged’). Talk about creepy yet fascinating performances. And the risk Whedon and the actors took doing a nearly hour of silent TV? Simply amazing.

Of course there’s so much more to say, but I’m on a mission. No time to talk, just have to watch. A reader suggested that I do a separate BUFFY blog, and in hindsight I wish I had done that when I started watching. Now I feel it’s a bit too late. I’ll try to post more Project Buffy updates soon and share my thoughts midway through Season 5. Some of the more OMG moments are usually posted via my Twitter updates (www.twitter.com/gmmr) because I just need to share them with someone. (Like when Riley showed up in Adam’s lair at the very end of the episode and I thought it was being revealed that Riley was a baddie the whole time. I damn near freaked.). Yeah, like that.

Ok, so I’m heading back to the show. Thanks to all of you for your comments and encouragement during Project BUFFY. You’re the best.

P.S. Remember…please no spoilers. It’s too good to be spoiled.

Spike is my absolute favorite character on that show. I actually prefer him to Angel strangely.

Don’t worry, you’ll warm up to Tara in season five. Season 4 Tara I hated her because she took the place of Oz. Oh, Seth Green…

What about Xander? Have you not warmed up to him yet? He’s the heart of the group, you gotta love him.

I’m so glad you’re finally getting into Buffy! It’s about time!

When I went into “Buffy” this past year I too thought there was NO WAY I could love Spike.. but oh how the tides have changed. He’s my favorite person in the show (even surpassing Angel!) – He just gets better and better…

“Hush” is a great episode but I absolutely promise you it can get better – wait ’til the musical!

Out of curiousity – have you watched any Angel episodes yet? How about the two crossovers from Angel S1? (I Will Remember You and Five By Five/Santuary) I almost feel like Buffy S4 isn’t complete without watching those three Angel episodes.

SO glad you are loving it! You pretty much have all the same opinions as me regarding Oz and Spike. And when I first saw Herc on FNL, I was like, “It’s Tara’s asshole brother!!” I never really warmed to Riley, though I can admit that Marc Blucas was some nice eye candy.

And like I said in a previous post, I’m starting my Buffy journey all over again. I’m starting season 2 tonight–can’t wait for my first Oz sighting!! ๐Ÿ˜‰ Thanks for encouraging me to spend endless hours watching this series again!

PS–Yeah, FNL renewal!! You just made my night with that info!! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Woot go GMMR! I started watching Buffy over again a few weeks ago and now you’re all caught up to me (I’m on S5D3). I love me some Spike so I hope you continue to enjoy his evolving character.
You should definitely check out the crossovers with Angel when you get a chance for some more Spike goodness.

Um, why is Riley letting vamps suck on his blood? Is he trying to live up to Angel by becoming a vamp? Oh no!!

Don’t answer that question…please! I’m sure I’ll find out either way soon enough.

  9. Rae on March 7th, 2008 9:52 pm

Ha! I knew it was going to take you awhile on Tara after your email about Oz. I came to love Tara but Oz remains my favorite Willow pairing. I mean… does it get better than this:

OZ: Sometimes when I’m sitting in class… You know, I’m not thinking about class, ’cause that would never happen. I think about kissing you. And it’s like everything stops. It’s like, it’s like freeze frame. Willow kissage. (pause) Oh, I’m not gonna kiss you.

    WILLOW: What? But freeze frame!

OZ: Well, to the casual observer, it would appear that you’re trying to make your friend Xander jealous or even the score or something. And that’s on the empty side. See, in my fantasy when I’m kissing *you*, you’re kissing *me*. It’s okay. I can wait.

#9 – Rae, love that quote. I love me all kinds of Oz. He was just the sweetest.

#3 – Sabrina, I do love Xander, but I wish they would give him something more to do. Always with the inappropriate one liners and getting beat up. I liked the ep where he was split – the new and improved Xander was much more interesting.

  11. Jenn on March 7th, 2008 10:45 pm

Just wait for Xander to shine, he’s so important to the Buffyverse. As much as I love Spike, Xander might be my favorite character. He may have random one liners a lot but when he has something to say, to really say, he gets the job done right.

  12. Give Me My Remote on March 7th, 2008 10:51 pm

OH MY GOD!!! Can I tell you I just saw the FULL effect of your comment oh about 1 minute ago. Just watched Xander confront Buffy about Riley leaving. He was AMAZING!!!

  13. Jenn on March 8th, 2008 12:07 am

Ya, that was the last ep I watched so I knew you would be getting there soon. As someone else said Xander is the heart of the group. When he goes to Anya after, my heart melts every time and I wonder why oh why he’s not working on anything I’m watching these days.

Enjoy the rest of your Buffy filled night ๐Ÿ™‚

Hopefully I get to watch Triangle later on and I don’t fall too much behind your fun Buffy posts.

  14. Courtney on March 8th, 2008 12:38 am

Haha. Season 4 has its weak moments, to be sure. In fact, in the original season 4 DVD set, Joss apologizes for one episode that was especially bad. He said that they thought it’d be good but he’s apologizing (though he doesn’t name which one!).
Anyway, season 5 is possibly my favorite season, but don’t be afraid to have large “uggh!” feelings toward Dawn now that she’s actually in the series. That tends to be a concensus, too–I think you can see her obnoxatronness in the first couple episodes she’s in! Especially her Harriet the Spy reenactment.

It’s so exciting to see another person succumb to Buffy. I never watched it when it was on but became obsessed when FX started showing the entire show through syndication. The really great stuff is coming up right quick. Also, not to be nit-picky, but you keep saying “except” when you mean “accept.” Just FYI.

#15 – You’re so very right. *blushes* I due no the difference between the too words, but I guess I messed up. (Ha ha ha ha)

    Seriously, thanks!

    Hi Kathy!

It is quite the cooincinence that I have just finished season 4 of Buffy and am starting season 5! My friend Sierra has always loved the show, and got me completely hooked on it now!

So far, I think my favorite episode has to be “Hush”.
She also has me started on Angel… it’s almost too much at once!

It’s nice to know I am not the only one in the world who is just discovering the hellmouth that is Buffy (and I mean that in a good way!).

I can’t wait to see how it all ends.

Have fun while you’re staying in Sunnydale!

Hey! Just saw your new post, and wanted to note that I did a very similar “Buffy Project” just before I moved recently, watching every episode from every season. Two things about this. One, it’s all encompassing! I mean, you get so into it that you don’t want to leave your TV. Two, when you are watching all of them in a row, you start to kind of think that you, too, might have super powers. For example, I went to the gas station in the middle of the night thinking, “if someone tried to mug me right now, I could totally roundhouse kick him.” HA!

  19. Andrea on March 8th, 2008 8:52 pm

Interesting thing about Xander: I kind of felt the same about him that you did – sure he’s fun but why do we have him around all the time? I don’t think I’m giving anything away when I say that the loudest I’ve gasped (it might have been a scream) was concerning Xander, so his influence kind of sneaks up on you.

A co-worker of mine went to high school with this actor and his twin brother. I was surprised to find out how old he really is – I think he graduated high school in 1989. It shouldn’t be a surprise since most “high schoolers” in TV are really 30, but I would not have guessed it of Xander.

I’m so glad you’re enjoying it. I watched most of Buffy with my boyfriend, who’d seen it before, so he skipped large chunks of Season 4 while assuring me they weren’t very interesting. I’ll go back someday, but I don’t think I missed anything particularly worth watching.

There’s a lot of good show to come, although personally I don’t think the show ever quite recaptures some of the early magic. However, it’s definitely worth watching (and I can’t wait until you finish Season 5 so I can share my thoughts on that ending…)

  21. Jen (Peng9803) on March 9th, 2008 3:41 am

Question: Will you be reading Season 8 once you finish with all the DVDs? Are you interested in the comics or not? The latest issue has been getting a lot of press, even from the NYT and Perez Hilton (two completely different ends of the spectrum).

Also, after seeing “Once More With Feeling” you should help try to save the Buffy Sing-along because it’s such a great thing to go to. I went to the one at Coolidge Corner Theater (and this was before I bought the series set so I had missed a few seasons, including the one that included this episode) and it was really great to see on the big screen with a bunch of people singing the song (and they didn’t need the words!). I missed when they had “The Prom” themed sing-along but I heard it was great fun and people dressed up!

  22. Jess on March 9th, 2008 5:37 am

Hush is amazing!! Definitely one of my top three Buffy episodes. Luckily for you, my top two episodes are yet to come. Enjoy!

And Spike is so my man!

  23. tubetalkgirl on March 9th, 2008 11:27 pm

Yay! You’re finally on board with my beloved Buffy. You’re right about Hush. Best TV hour ever!

[…] mentioned before, Kath over at GMMR is currently wrapped in a Project Buffy of her own. She resisted for a long time but has finally given in and is blazing through all seven seasons. […]

I did my own Project Buffy about 4 years ago. I totally missed the show when it was on cause my kids were babies and now I am a die hard fan. Hush and the musical are two of my favorites because they are so different. I can’t wait to hear what you say about OMWF when you watch it. As for Spike, he’s my favorite definitely for the humor he gives to the show; though he doesn’t look half bad either ;).
