Tonight’s TV Spotlight…Thursday, March 12, 2009

March 12, 2009 by

It’s a BIG night for TV.  Are you ready? Can you handle it?

All arrows are pointing to George Clooney‘s return to ER tonight.  Mr. Clooney must have made some deal that prohibited ER from promoting his return because there is nothing to be gained by not telling the world he’s going to be on.  The promos suggest that all the doctor’s will be back tonight. I haven’t watched ER is years and I know I’ll be tuning in, will you?

And if that wasn’t enough we’ve also got new episodes of THE OFFICE and 30 ROCK. If it wasn’t for that damn KATH & KIM I’d probably be tuned into NBC all night.

Fandoms around the globe will be happy for new episodes of BONES, SMALLVILLE & SUPERNATURAL all which seem to have the most random schedules. At least we know BONES will be back for 11 episodes in a row. That’s huge. GMMR will have reviews of all of these shows tomorrow, so make sure you come back and check them out.

I don’t want to hear any complaining that there’s nothing on to watch…check out just a few of the shows airing new episodes tonight.

Bones| 8pm on Fox
“The Bones That Foam”
While bungee jumping, a couple discover a corpse at the bottom of a gorge; the lab is thrown into lockdown when an unknown substance begins oozing from the corpse. [GMMR: Did you see BONES on the cover of TV Guide? Holy hotness. ]

Smallville | 8pm on The CW
“Infamous”
Linda Lake (Tori Spelling) returns to Metropolis and threatens to expose Clark’s secret unless he gives her an exclusive on the red-blue blur; Clark, refusing to be blackmailed, tells Lois his secret and asks her to write his story.

Survivor: Tocantins | 8pm on CBS
“You’re Going to Want that Tooth”

An overzealous castaway risks it all in the immunity challenge and pays with a tooth, while another castaway finds himself in hot water for not performing during the challenge. [GMMR: Hey SURVIVOR fans – do you want us to cover the show in the next TV TALK PODCAST? Leave a comment and let me know. ]

Ugly Betty | 8pm on ABC
“A Mother of a Problem”
Things don’t go as expected when Betty meets Matt’s mother (Christine Baranski); the Suarez family secretly tries to set Hilda up with Archie (Ralph Macchio). [GMMR: Sweep the leg!]

The Office | 9pm on NBC
“Golden Ticket”
Michael comes up with an idea that causes a huge problem in the office; Pam, Jim and Andy each give Kevin different advice on wooing a woman. [GMMR: Glad to see that Andy is back from his honeymoons. We missed you, Nard Dog!]

Supernatural | 9pm on The CW
Death Takes a Holiday”
Sam and Dean investigate a town where people are cheating death and discover that the Reapers have gone missing. [GMMR: I have nothing to add here other than I just watched a promo and those Winchester boys are damn easy on the eyes.]

Grey’s Anatomy | 9pm on ABC
“I Will Follow You Into the Dark”
Derek decides to quit after learning that more of his patients have died than survived; Izzie’s interns make an unsettling discovery about “Patient X.” [GMMR: Oh no! Might Derek leave Seattle Grace? Will Patrick Dempsey leave the show? The suspense is killing me! (/sarcasm)]

30 Rock | 9:30pm on NBC
“The Funcooker”
The TGS cast and crew are left unmanaged when Liz can’t get out of jury duty; Jack gets absorbed in launching a new product. [GMMR: The promos for this episode look hilarious. I’m already excited for Leia Lemon.]

Private Practice | 10pm on ABC
“Finishing”
Addison flirts with a colleague at St. Ambrose Hospital; Sheldon and Pete try to convince Violet to take a paternity test; Sam accidentally calls Sonya by the wrong name. [GMMR: Not for nothing but how about a story line for Piz?!]

ER | 10pm on NBC
“Old Times”
Neela and Sam are stunned when they return to the airport with transplant organs, only to find their plane left without them; Dr. Carter (Noah Wyle) gets a surprise visit from an old friend (Eriq La Salle) while waiting for his kidney transplant. [GMMR: Why do I feel that if Clooney is on is will only be in one scene? Let’s hope not.]

Also playing…

  • Kath & Kim | 8:30pm on NBC: Kath asks Phil to move in with her; Kim gets upset when Craig doesn’t remember their second date anniversary.
  • Hells Kitchen | 9:00pm on Fox: The teams must prepare food for a bar mitzvah; after one contestant is eliminated, the top 10 chefs are revealed.
  • CSI | 9pm on CBS: Riley and Langston are taken hostage after a shootout in a normally quiet Las Vegas community.
  • Eleventh Hour | 10pm on CBS: Dr. Hood investigates a series of homicidal outbursts during Fashion Week in New York.

Watched ER and it was a great episode. I got goosebumps when Carol Hathaway and Doug Ross walked out and we also got a shoutout here in Portland when they used the actual name of the hospital OHSU. Too bad just moments later they completely BUTCHERED the name of the snowiest place in Washington…Spokane (pronounced spoh-can, not spoh-CANE). I shook my head an laughed through the next few lines. You cannot live in that state (or Oregon, for that matter) without hearing about the snow in Spokane during the winter. That aside, Noah Wylie and Eriq LaSalle stole the show. You could see that admiration that Carter still had for his mentor and we all cheered when Dr. Benton stood by and made sure that Carter got the proper attention to detail in his surgery! Dr. “Hands” needs to check his attitude. Does anyone forsee the finale episode being Dr. Benton’s return to the teaching hospital, County General?

Loved the line at the end about the liver going to “some doctor”. Funny how Dr. Ross went down the list of the old regime to see who was still there and Dr. Carter didn’t come up. That would be natural that you wouldn’t remember to list every single name. Plus, he might know that Carter wouldn’t be there since he left for Africa so long ago.

I agree that NBC shouldn’t have hyped the return of George Clooney. Glad they didn’t promote Susan Sarandon either because they were just small supporting players that moved the story along. It would have been a big gigantic letdown if they made a big deal about it because the episode wasn’t about Dr. Ross, it was about Dr. Carter.

This has been a great season! I hope that Ray and Neela do not get together. I really like that Australian doctor for Neela. I heard Abby may make a brief appearance. I’d love to see her and Carter reunite for some scenes. They are forever my favorite ER couple. They’ll always have a connection. You don’t forget someone who pays for your entire medical schooling!

Survivor I could take it or leave it. I like the little Exile Island alliance idea.

For your podcast, I don’t think you have to skip an show/episode discussion altogether just because one of you doesn’t watch. If there are shows that only one of you watches, put out a poll or ask for comments to get ready for your podcast. We’ll give you someone to bounce stuff off of. Dan kept bringing up shows that I watch and since you didn’t watch he just left us hangin’!

I can’t listen to “Two Idiots Talk Lost” because I refuse to be involved until I watch for myself. I have only watched the first season. I will some day get caught up but until then I have to fast forward through you guys. I’ll probably want to go back and re-listen to those parts. Maybe not. lol

Here’s a random question….are there any television shows that you can sit down and watch over and over even though it’s a re-run over and over? We’ve been on a major NCIS kick and now that my husband discovered reruns on USA we have it on every day before the prime time shows come on. When I was growing up it was MASH on the tube every day at 6:30pm.
