YOU Be the Network Exec – One Hour a Day TV

March 16, 2009 by

This post has the makings of a horror story. Please don’t be frightened…it’s not real.

The year in 2010. In light of the economic crisis, the networks have opted to run ongoing news coverage 23/7. This leaves only one hour a day, seven days a week for non-news viewing. Given your love for all things TV, YOU have been chosen to dictate the one hour of programming that will be viewed by the masses each day. You are not constrained by budget and you don’t have to be worried about ratings. Your only allegiance is to the viewing public. Their TV entertainment is limited and it’s up to you to make them happy.

If you alone programmed the TV schedule, one hour out of each day, what would the TV schedule look like?

It’s tough, but here’s my schedule…

Monday: Mad Men – Consider it the weekly history lesson.  Let’s watch together and learn from our mistakes while also getting some savvy fashion advice.

Tuesday: Chuck – This one show alone covers the action, drama, comedy & romance genres. It’s four shows for the price of one.

Wednesday: Lost – What? There would be anarchy if we didn’t air the ending to LOST.

Thursday:The Office/How I Met Your Mother – Jim Halpert & Barney Stinson. Need I say more.

Friday: Friday Night Lights – The only way I could ensure that FNL was getting the eyeballs it needed to stay on the air.  Could I make my favorite drama yours?

Saturday: So You Think You Can Dance – Don’t we need a little art in our lives? It’s the best of the best of reality shows.

Sunday: The Big Bang Theory/The Daily Show – I like my men smart and funny.  Plus, with 23/7 news shows we’re going to need Jon Stewart more than ever to help us sort through the BS.

Leave your TV schedule below.

How could you propose such a nightmare on a Monday morning! One hour of TV? EEEK!

I will have to think about this long and hard.

  2. Alyson on March 16th, 2009 1:05 pm

    Uh, SO hard.

Sunday: Chuck — b/c, as GMMR, it manages to mix genres better than anyone
Monday: Big Bang Theory/HIMYM — b/c Sheldon Cooper and Barney Stinson are golden.
Tuesday: Gossip Girl — b/c Chuck & Blair are my favorite TV couple, hands down
Wednesday: LOST — b/c Benjamin Linus is my favorite villain on TV.
Thursday: The Office/Jeopardy — b/c every Thursday is Pretzel Day for me and b/c I need the reaffirmation that I’m somewhat intelligent at least once a week
Friday: Friday Night Lights — b/c it’s the most heartfelt and realistic TV on all week long..
Saturday: SYTYCD — b/c I love watching these kids create art each week. Is it summer yet?

  3. Give Me My Remote on March 16th, 2009 1:07 pm

Alyson – I see why you might comment here on GMMR…we watch ALL the same shows!

    Keep ’em coming!

Monday- HIMYM/The Office: I like your pair-up of the two. However, I think a Monday showing would be good so that people can look forward to the rest of their work week to get to the following Monday. 🙂

Tuesday- Law & Order: SUV: I think that we need something gritty during the week.

Wednesday- LOST: Yes, we have to finish it.

Thursday- Chuck: Just a little something-something going into the weekend.

Friday- So You Think You Can Dance: I also believe it’s the better reality show of everything that’s playing. Putting it on a Friday lets people have a choice if they don’t like reality shows, they can go take in the newest flick.

Saturday- The Daily Show/ The Colbert Report: Always need a little re-cap. Plus, if they’re taping on Saturday, more people will be in the audience rather than them taping during the week. All those tourists in NYC. Heh…

Sunday- Gossip Girl: Sunday’s a good night for mindless drivel. LOL.

  5. seat42f on March 16th, 2009 1:10 pm

    Monday – Chuck
    Tuesday – Fringe
    Wed – Lost
    Thurs – Damages
    Friday – Mad Men
    Saturday – The Office/Californication
    Sunday – Dexter

  6. Alyssa on March 16th, 2009 1:19 pm

Monday – I also agree with HIMYM/The Office I can’t live w/o Ted, Barney and Jim
    Tuesday – Bones
    Wednesday – Lost
    Thursday – 30 Rock/Scrubs
    Friday – Friday Night Lights
Saturday – Pushing Daisies (since it’s kind of movie-like)
    Sunday – Gossip Girl

I also love SYTYCD and would want that shown any night where there’s repeats. That’s cheating, I know!

  7. Kelly on March 16th, 2009 1:27 pm

Okay this took me a loooong time! The only reason I’m stopping is because I have to get some work done 🙂

    Monday – Chuck
Tuesday – Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother
    Wednesday – Supernatural
    Thursday – Big Love
Friday – 30 Rock and The Office
    Saturday -Damages
    Sunday – The Tudors

  8. Give Me My Remote on March 16th, 2009 1:29 pm

Seat42F – you leave very little room for humor in your life 😉

  9. Nicole on March 16th, 2009 1:45 pm

    This is HARD (twss)!

Monday: Chuck (it makes Mondays bearable now; no reason to stop that)
Tuesday: The Office/HIMYM (perfect combo, although I do love BBT)
Wednesday: Brothers & Sisters (tears and laughs and I love Kevin and Scotty)
Thursday: Supernatural (In a world as bleak as what you’re proposing, we need the Winchesters more than ever)
Friday: Friday Night Lights (does perfection need to be justified?)
Saturday: Flight of the Conchords/Daily Show (for some weekend levity)
Sunday: Weeds (drama and comedy all in one; plus, Justin Kirk)

  10. bubblewrap on March 16th, 2009 2:09 pm

    What a nightmare situation-lol!

Monday: Chuck (Couldn’t do without this show!)
Tuesday: Fringe (Didn’t really like it at the beginning- but I love it now and wouldn’t want it gone)
Wednesday: Bones (My week isn’t complete without bickering from Booth and Brennan)
Thursday: The Office/ Big Bang Theory (2 hilarious comedies-Need I say more?)
Friday: Friday Night Lights (If it’s the only thing on people have to watch it- right?)
Saturday: Castle (Ok- so I’ve only seen the first episode but I want it to stay around)
Sunday: The Mentalist (I didn’t realize how much I’m loving this show until it went into it’s hiatus for the past month)

  11. Tanja on March 16th, 2009 2:59 pm

Monday – Dexter (start the week of right with a little serial killing)
Tuesday – How I Met Your Mother/The Office – (everyone needs their dose of Jim Halpert and Barney Stinson)
Wednesday – Lost (we all want to know how it ends… and who doesn’t love a little evil Ben Linus every week?)
Thursday – Bones (a little bit of drama, a little comedy, a little chemistry. Best crime solving show out there right now… but we’ll see about Castle i did love the first ep)
Friday – Big Bang Theory/Scrubs (funny nerds and Funny Doctors)
Saturday – Hockey Night in Canada (being from Toronto my Saturday nights have always had HNIC. So it can show a highlights one hour version of my Maple Leafs games)/ And for the people who live in the States I say SYTYCD for Saturdays.

  12. Alyson on March 16th, 2009 3:39 pm

Kelly, good call with Damages. It was almost on my list of shows, but I’m more into the comedic shows these days.

  13. Ryan on March 16th, 2009 4:54 pm

    In no particular order…

Office, Mad Men, Dexter, FNL, Psych, Burn Notice, Daily Show, and…

I leave myself the right to change this with another show if it doesn’t live up to its promise, but Kings for some new flavor.

  14. LaLa on March 16th, 2009 5:12 pm

    Monday: 24
    Tuesday: House
    Wednesday: Lost
    Thursday: The Office/Jeopardy!
    Friday: Psych
    Saturday: Doctor Who
Sunday: Pushing Daisies (b/c it’s sort of still on the air)

Actually, this wasn’t that hard for me, since this is pretty much all the TV that I watch these days – except for a few reality TV show guilty pleasures that I could definitely live without….

  15. P D Yerf on March 16th, 2009 5:41 pm

Sunday: Project Runway, because starting the week off with amazing and terrible fashion plus Heidi Klum would make everything okay.
Monday: Pushing Daisies, because we need extra happiness on Mondays.
Tuesday: The Office/30 Rock, because I love this combo and Tina Fey deserves to always be employed (and John Krasinski’s face deserves to always be shown off)
Wednesday: Chuck to push us through the middle of the week
Thursday: Gossip Girl, for the one show I don’t feel any need to criticize, it’s amazing in all its flaws 🙂
Friday: Bring back Firefly!!!! Because a week without Joss Whedon at his best would be a sad week indeed
Saturday: SNL, because if it was reduced to an hour all the terrible skits would be forced out and only the good ones would remain 😀

  16. Philiana Ng on March 16th, 2009 6:01 pm

So incredibly difficult, but here goes:

MONDAYS: 30 Rock, Better Off Ted — Why not start off the week with a strong comedy line-up?
TUESDAYS: Gossip Girl — The perfect show to divulge yourself in.
WEDNESDAYS: House — Perfect medicine to cure the middle of the week-itis.
THURSDAYS: How I Met Your Mother, The Office — Saving Thursdays for quality programs is a no-brainer.
FRIDAYS: Burn Notice — A kick-ass spy to close out the week is always an appropriate start to the weekend.
SATURDAYS: Leverage — Why not save an “Ocean’s 11”-esque show for that night in?
SUNDAYS: Mad Men — Thought-provoking and well-crafted, this is the perfect end to the weekend.

  17. spacyz on March 16th, 2009 6:08 pm

Sunday: The Amazing Race – this is one of the few shows that my young son and I watch together.
Monday: Big Bang Theory / The Office – funniest comedies on t.v.
Tuesday: NCIS – fun characters, and I need at least one of my standard procedurals.
Wednesday: Lost – can’t wait to see the final episodes.
Thursday: Supernatural – hot actors, great mythology, scary stories, enough said.
Friday: Friday Night Lights – amazing acting and drama.
Saturday: The Mentalist – love to watch Simon Baker and the fun he has on this show.

It is really difficult to leave off Chuck, House, SYTYCD, and Psych, among others, but I am going to stick with the list I have.

  18. spacyz on March 16th, 2009 6:12 pm

Philiana, good call on Leverage. I didn’t think of it but should have. That show really surprised me, and I can’t wait for it to return.

  19. JT on March 16th, 2009 7:30 pm

    Sunday – The Amazing Race
Monday – Chuck – the only thing that makes me look forward to Mondays
Tuesday – Desparate Housewive – I loved the first part of this season. Haven’t loved the last few episodes. Hopefully, I’ll love the rest.
    Wednesday – Lost
Thursday – Regis and Kelly – I’ve been watching Regis for years.
    Friday – The Office/Jon & Kate + 8
Saturday – Can’t think of another must see show, so a repeat of Chuck or Lost would be good for me.

  20. Scooter McGavin on March 16th, 2009 7:53 pm

Monday: The Big Bang Theory/Gary Unmarried
    Tuesday: Rescue Me
    Wedensday: Lost

friday night lights – love love love this show.
    bones – good stuff.
burn notice – for the spy tips if nothing else!
gossip girl – you know you love it.

i need more days in the week! mad men!!

  24. Billiam on March 16th, 2009 10:06 pm

    Chuck
Office/30 Rock (why mess with the pairing?)
HIMYM/Scrubs (I have to sacrifice BBT for my docs, although there’s only a handful of Scrubs eps left)
    Lost

Those are my have-tos. The rest I have to think over a bit more, but I’m going with:
    Friday Night Lights
    Burn Notice
Daily Show/ Cobert (if they were only on once a week, I’m sure the hour would be concentrated awesomeness)

(Terminator and 24 narrowly miss the boat)

  25. Becca on March 16th, 2009 10:12 pm

Monday – How I Met Your Mother / The Office – I need my HIMYM fix as soon as possible
Tuesday – Chuck – I love it so, so much
Wednesday – Pushing Daisies – To get you through the rest of the week!
    Thursday – Ugly Betty
Friday – Psych – A fun way to kick off the weekend
Saturday – Castle (Yeah, I’ve only seen the first episode, but I like it… and I’m running out of shows. Haha)
Sunday – Doctor Who – perfect for a Sunday afternoon

  26. kris on March 17th, 2009 4:19 am

It doesn’t sound so horrible. I watch far too much tv as it stands so maybe an hour limit would be good for me. haha.

    Monday: Gossip Girl
Tuesday: Heroes (only if every storyline revolved around Sylar)
    Wednesday: Psych
Thursday: The Office/HIMYM (Barney + Jim = awesome!)
Friday: The Bachelor(ette), Top Chef, American Idol (reality tv is my guilty pleasure so since these shows operate on an staggered schedule, it seems fair.)
Saturday: SNL (a condensed version, but only the best bits)
Sunday: Jon & Kate Plus 8/Jeopardy!

  27. Lisa (aka lmr) on March 17th, 2009 6:05 am

    Sunday – The Amazing Race
    Monday – Chuck
    Tuesday – BBT and HIMYM
    Wednesday – Mad Men
Thursday – 30 Rock and The Office
    Friday – FNL
Saturday – Rotation of Damages, Fringe, and The Mentalist (cheating 🙂

  28. edubbs5 on March 17th, 2009 12:32 pm

Okay – I love this idea – and only if it were true it would solve all of my non-DVR having problems.

Monday: I agree with others – give me my favorite men to start my week: HIMYM and The Office
Tuesday: Make me laugh: Entourage and 30 Rock
Wednesday: I heart Heidi : Project Runway
Thursday: Oh the colors: Ugly Betty
Friday: Maybe its just me but I love Stacy and Clinton, plus I need some ideas for cute outfits: What Not to Wear
Saturday: If only this were possible: The Daily Show and JUST Weekend Update SNL (and any skits that Justin is cameoing)

Really all I would need now is to fit in some blibs of Food Network and possibly a re-run of SaTC – I am a happy girl!
Sunday: Need recipes for the rest of the week: Iron Chef (or Top Chef)

  29. Alison on March 17th, 2009 3:20 pm

    Ok, lets see…
Sunday- Grey’s Anatomy- I’d like to start the week off with my favorite show
Monday- Chuck- for the reasons you’ve said lol
Tuesday- Desperate Housewives- I’ve watched it from the beginning so I can’t stop now lol
Wednesday- The Office and 30 Rock- Oh how I love Jim Halpert, and I’ve gotta give a stop to Tina Fey.
Thursday- Lost- because its insanelyyy good haha
Friday- One Tree Hill- it was either that or Gossip Girl but I’m obsessedd with OTH
Saturday- House- I need my weekly fill of Dr. House haha

If I could include shows that were cancelled I’d probably pick Pushing Daisies, and maybe Veronica Mars or The O.C. (I’m still obsessed lol)

  30. Simon on March 17th, 2009 3:21 pm

Okay, since the writers strike I’ve given up almost 75% of the shows that I used to watch, with that said I’m going to try to find 7 hours worth of awesome TV:

Monday- Big Bang Theory + The Office: It was tough to choose BBT over How I Met Your Mother, but ultimately, I decided that I do look forward to BBT more. The Office is my favourite comedy on TV, maybe ever…followed by Frasier.

Tuesday- Cold Case: This show does not get the respect it deserves. Not just a crime procedure, it uses awesome flashes to what happened to the victim, showing the era in which they were killed amazingly. This show is not only a crime procedure, it comments on civilization of present and the past.

Wednesday- Lost: Yes, I’m one of those obsessed with Lost. I go on forums, analyze screen caps and have as much merchandise as I can afford. I’m pretty young, but I’m sure that I’ll never like or be obsessed with a show as much as I am with Lost.

Thursday- Skins: Skins is a British show currently on its third season. Though about Teens, this is not your average CW show. It is very edgy, as it shows teens completely naked, doing all sorts of drugs, gay and lesbian love scenes and, obviously, a lot of cursing. That said, the writers have the amazing ability of creating three dimensional characters that are interesting and compelling.

Friday- Friday Night Lights: I’m not completely caught up with the show, (I only just finished the second season), but Coach and Mrs Taylor maybe the coolest, most interesting parents on TV history.

Saturday- Brothers and Sisters: Though I don’t care for a lot of the politics incorporated into the show, I really love Nora and her relationship with her family. Though not all of it works for me (characters Kevin and Justin in particular), I am truly entertained by this hit and miss show.

Sunday- Kings: As I said before, I’ve given up a hell of a lot of TV. Not only that, but I don’t start watching shows just because. I don’t have time to watch average programs (Fringe), and though Kings has only had one two-hour-long episode, I completely loved it. This show incorporated many things that interest me: world and social politics, family relationships, despising antagonists, awesome special effects and Ian McShane. Way excited to see where this show goes.

  31. JD on March 24th, 2009 12:20 am

Sunday The Amazing Race- the only reality show I watch every season.. even the horrible family edition

Monday Chuck- for every reason everyone has already given

Tuesday Lost – how does it end.. who cares this show is great

Wednesday HIMYM & BBT – I love Barney… and I am starting to really dig BBT

Thursday Burn Notice – my favorite show on TV hands down

Friday Supernatural – Dean and Sam Winchester.. nothing more to say

Saturday Dexter – a serial killer to round off the week

  32. charles on March 28th, 2009 12:09 am

    Monday – Heroes
    Tuesday – Gossip Girl
    Wednesday – 90210
Thursday – 30 Rock / Better Off Ted
Friday – Kyle XY (even if it’s all reruns)
    Saturday – Saturday NIght Live
Sunday – The Office / HIMYM

  33. Kristen on March 30th, 2009 4:51 pm

Monday: Gossip Girl (Because I need my fill of high school drama)
Tuesday: Chuck (This show has everything!)
Wednesday: The Office and 30 Rock (Definitely a staple of my week)
Thursday: Supernatural (Because it just wouldn’t be Thursday without Sam and Dean)
Friday: Psych (Or Project Runway when Psych is on hiatus :])
Saturday: Flight of the Conchords (It’s just silly fun)
Sunday: The Big Bang Theory and Scrubs (BBT is a MUST and Scrubs is there to fill up the extra half hour)
