In the aftermath of LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT saying goodbye to Chief Dodds (Peter Gallagher), who was demoted in the season 21 premiere, the series is bringing in a new boss for the just-promoted Captain Benson (Mariska Hargitay) to report to.

AMERICAN GODS’ Demore Barnes has signed on to recur on the long-running drama, Give Me My Remote has learned. Barnes’ Deputy Chief Christian Garland will first appear in the Thursday, October 10 hour, “Down Low in Hell’s Kitchen.” In the episode, the squad tackles a ripped-from-the-headlines case, as a celebrity’s attack may have been faked—and everyone wants to know what the heck happened.

Garland, who is described as intelligent and analytical, immediately makes an impression during his first case when he helps SVU make a pivotal move during the investigation.

But it may not be all smooth sailing: “There was a comfort level [Olivia] had with Dodds,” executive producer Warren Leight previously teased.

Barnes previously alluded to his role on the series on social media, telling fans he was “[e]xcited for you to see what I’ve been up to” on the drama.
