About Last Night…PSYCH, SUBURGATORY, AMERICAN HORROR STORY and HAPPY ENDINGS

October 13, 2011 by

Wednesday was one of those nights where I knew I had a ton of stuff to watch…and yet I barely made a dent.

It’s entirely probable most of my distraction was due to the season premiere of PSYCH. The show is truly one of my personal television highlights, and I’m so glad it’s back. Lassiter hooking up Juliet to a “broken” lie detector machine as a means of getting her to admit she was in a relationship with Shawn? So wrong and yet so right. And while the show had teased Lassiter hooking up Shawn to the same machine and asking him if he was a psychic, you just knew Henry had taught Shawn to beat those things as a kid. (Something that was confirmed in a flashback we got at the episode.) However…if we’re to buy into the Shawn/Juliet romance, can he at least clue her in to his act soon? I’m having difficulty buying into them as a couple, given the major lie we know is standing between them.

I don’t think any new comedy series has been as consistent as SUBURGATORY. I’m not sure if I’ve ever been more entertained by Jeremy Sisto or Cheryl Hines and Jane Levy handles the balance of playing a wise teen without making her an obnoxious know-it-all quite well. Anyone else watching this amusing show?

Also amusing me on Wednesday nights is HAPPY ENDINGS, a series I’m really glad I gave a second chance to. Megan Mullally was fantastic as Dana, Penny’s mother, and I now want to start a fight with someone just so we can conduct it via song. (Best idea ever?!) However, when I find myself singing “Torn” a week from now, I will be blaming them for getting that song in my head. (And no, I will not be doing Dana and Penny’s choreography.)

And then there’s AMERICAN HORROR STORY. I find myself weirdly fascinated by this show. The pilot was uneven, but the end intrigued me. The second hour amped up the “thriller” aspect of the “psychosexual thriller” genre co-creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk have placed it in. And while I never doubted that none of our guys would be safe, I was sucked in to their kidnapping. I’m curious as to how Ben will deal with his mistress, who I’d bet is still pregnant. The show isn’t perfect, but being intrigued is a step in the right direction.

Things now sitting on my TiVo: MODERN FAMILY (I’m judging myself for not watching this, too), HARRY’S LAW, LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT and REVENGE. Oy.
