THE GOLDBERGS — one of the best new shows from last season — returns for its second season tonight, and while the summer has passed for the family, one thing has remained the same: Beverly is as smother-y as ever.

“The premiere is called ‘[Love is a] Mix Tape,’ and my son (Adam) has made a mix tape for a special lady,” THE GOLDBERGS star Wendi McLendon-Covey (Beverly) teased in character. “I assume that’s me. I am a very special lady, you understand — I don’t understand why he would have someone else.”

And while one might assume the song selection might have tipped off others, Beverly has found a way to justify the track list on “her” gift.

“No matter what song it is, I can figure out how it would relate to me,” McLendon-Covey laughed. But Adam won’t be the only Goldberg child in over his head in the season premiere: “During that episode, my other two beautiful children are trying to get fake IDs.”

Tonight also marks THE GOLDBERGS first official new airing on Wednesday nights (repeats have aired there this summer), and McLendon Covey admitted the fan response to this summer’s reruns have surprised her.

“During repeats, that’s what really blows me away,” she acknowledged. “There’s this whole faction of the Goldnerds — they have membership cards and everything. I love it. I love that people are engaged in the show. And sometimes they break news before I even know it!”

“We were able to build an audience following a sci-fi show that has nothing to do with [us],” she continued. “And yet we were able to build an audience. We can only do better in this time slot. So I’m happy because the 8:30 time slot is more family-friendly anyway. It tickles me when I hear that people like to watch with their kids. There’s very few shows you can do that with. And yet, it’s not dumbed down to appeal only to kids or to not shock the kids. We’re honest. We don’t pull any punches. It’s based in family truth and craziness. And that’s relatable across all ages.”

THE GOLDBERGS season 2 premieres tonight at 8:30 PM on ABC.
