Marisa’s Top 14 Shows of 2014

December 24, 2014 by

It was another great year for television, and to celebrate that, I made my list of the top shows in 2014.

As per usual, my annual disclaimer: I literally can’t watch every show, and so some shows that probably should be here (like TRANSPARENT) didn’t make the cut because I couldn’t catch up in time. (But on the bright side, I caught up on every show I name-checked last year as not being caught up on.)

So, these are my top shows of the year…

1. MASTERS OF SEX

MASTERS OF SEX has the unusual task of having to cover a huge amount of time in the span on a television series, and with that, the show has to find ways to creatively jump over years, in a way where viewers didn't miss too much. It's an ambitious task, and I loved how the show handled jumping forward several years while still showing us snippets in between.
And yes, Bill and Virginia's relationship evolved as they dealt with other researchers, jealousy, and his impotence. But personally, no hour resonated as strongly for me as "Fight," an incredible episode which showcased not only Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan's incredible talents (and chemistry), but offered heartbreaking insight into Bill's early life (which the show expanded on it with the introduction of Bill's brother later in the season) juxtaposed with a boxing match the two were watching on television and the case of a young baby with ambiguous sexual organs.
And while the show mostly lost the fabulous work of Allison Janney and Beau Bridges for season 2 due to their other commitments, the rest of the supporting cast stepped up. Annaleigh Ashford was especially amazing as Betty struggled with her marriage (and closeted sexuality) after her ex-love came back into the picture.
The show set the stage for potential conflict in season 3 as Bill secretly torpedoed their CBS interview in an attempt to help Virginia, Libby started an affair (and revealed to Robert that she knows about Bill's affair with Virginia), and Virginia now only has partial custody of her kids. I'm very curious to see where the show goes in season 3, but with season 2, it was my top show of the year.

And have you seen Sarah and Kelly’s lists, too? Check out Sarah’s top shows and top episodes, as well as Kelly’s top shows and top episodes.
