HOLLYWOOD GAME NIGHT: Jane Lynch on Season 3’s New Games, Returning Celebrity Players, and More
July 7, 2015 by Marisa Roffman
HOLLYWOOD GAME NIGHT — one of the most purely enjoyable shows on television — is back for its third season tonight, and it’s “business” as usual for the show’s Emmy-winning host, Jane Lynch.
“That’s what’s great about it: we haven’t changed anything fundamentally, just for the sake of changing it, because it works the way it works,” Lynch told reporters on the show’s set. “[Though] coming up with the new games is always a challenge. And we have more new games this season — we probably won’t even use them all — than we had [total] games the first season. They’re really on their game.”
Among the new additions to the show? A game that features Lynch singing slightly botched song lyrics to the contestants. And though Lynch is no stranger to singing while performing — whether it’s on GLEE or Broadway — she wasn’t the one to push for music to be integrated into her hosting duties.
“No, I wasn’t [asking for this]. But this is perfect, because most of the songs [in the game] are from the ’70s and ’80s, which is my era,” Lynch laughed. “I couldn’t do anything Katy Perry, I couldn’t do anything Beyonce. So this is great — this is right in my wheelhouse of music.”
In addition to the new games, there will also be a new crop of celebrities to appear on the show.
“Paul Scheer, from FRESH OFF THE BOAT, he is amazing,” Lynch gushed. So smart…he brought everyone up with him…[We have] Kevin Smith…Joe Jonas was here, that was great. Bobby Moynihan from SNL, and Jay Pharoah.”
And, of course, there are some returning celebs: “Rosie O’Donnell is back and as competitive as ever,” Lynch shared. “Nate Berkus, he is fantastic…he’s really good at it. Yvette [Nicole Brown] is amazing. and a charming, lovely, great player.”
Lynch’s praise for the players isn’t confined to just the celebrities — she admitted she has been very impressed with the caliber of “civilian” contestants HOLLYWOOD GAME NIGHT has recruited.
“Whoever is choosing the civilian contestants knows what the heck they’re doing,” she said. “It’s not that you choose someone who knows their pop culture. It [has to be] a charming person, who’s not too star-struck to be frozen; we’ve had that happen, where the civilians freezes. And gets along well with others. We’ve had the most charming, delightful, bright lights for humans [every year], but especially this season…we had a 65-year-old grandma…and she was just lovely and fantastic. We had two school teachers.”
After three seasons of hosting HOLLYWOOD GAME NIGHT — and three seasons of hosting the now-traditional HOLLYWOOD GAME NIGHT press game (as you can see in the photo to the left, we take this — and the results — very seriously) — Lynch said she doesn’t often want to be on the other side of the game, but she does have one game she kills at: Celebrity.
“I’m really good at Celebrity, if I do say so myself,” she shared. “I think the key to good Celebrity playing is when they don’t get it, take the word apart, really quickly. Like with Elon Musk [who was an example during the press game], I was thinking, what would I say? A very earthy smell; musk. What’s the second vowel? E. What is a big spread of grass? Lawn. Elon Musk…I’ve played it at parties. Not only am I really good at it, but I’m a little aggressive.”
