Looking Back at the BONES Series Finale

March 28, 2018 by

On March 28, 2017, BONES concluded its 12-season run on Fox.

The 246 episodes the drama ran is impressive on any level, but in an age when few shows even film 20+ episode seasons, it’s hard to imagine many current shows reaching that milestone. (BONES ended its run as Fox’s longest-running live-action series; THE X-FILES just reached 218, but likely won’t go beyond that.)

Of course, the people associated with the show have been busy since then: David Boreanaz’s (Booth) SEAL TEAM was just renewed for season 2; Tamara Taylor (Cam) was on season 1 of ALTERED CARBON; Michaela Conlin (Angela) will be on YELLOWSTONE; John Francis Daley has found a great amount of success with screenwriting; and a gaggle of squinterns/supporting characters are popping up all over TV.

It’s hard to have a series finale that pleases everyone—especially when a show runs as long as BONES did, and had to end an earlier season as a potential series closer—but a year removed from the ending, I remain grateful for what they did. No one died. (I know death happens in television shows, but given how much these characters went through—and the people they lost along the way—I was glad they were spared in the final hour.) Hodgins (TJ Thyne) was made the official King of the Lab. Cam adopted a trio of brothers with Arastoo (Pej Vahdat). Booth and Brennan (Emily Deschanel) bantered until the very end, and it’s nice to imagine they’re still off somewhere solving crimes. (Though, I guess, RIP the old Jeffersonian lab. That loss was brutal.)

We covered BONES a lot at GiveMeMyRemote (and if you missed Sarah’s excellent recaps, they remain the best), and after its long run, it’s still a little surreal the show isn’t currently on television. But in honor of the show’s finale anniversary, I wanted to look back at one of my favorite tidbits the show’s stars/producers shared during the course of the series: their memories of their first day on set. (And if you want to go deeper down the BONES retrospective rabbit hole, we have all of our BONES videos in this playlist.)
