When SUPERSTORE revealed that Amy (America Ferrera) and Jonah (Ben Feldman) were secretly dating at the start of season 4, series creator Justin Spitzer noted the duo were still in the early stages of their romance….and he half-joked viewers might never see the two exchange “I love you”s on-screen.

It didn’t last long: while mid-fight on Valentine’s Day (in “Lovebirds”), the duo accidentally shared that they loved each other. “We didn’t set out to break the story with that in mind,” Spitzer admits. “We showed up to break a story where it’s their first Valentine’s Day, and they have a fight they are surrogates for, and how it undermines their [own] Valentine’s Day [plans]. And it just felt right.”

“Sometimes I cringe at stories that make too big a deal of ‘I love you,’” he continues. “I feel like there’s especially a sitcom trope [about that milestone]. It’s all of this build-up. And not to be anti-romantic, but they are just words and I don’t know there’s that much turmoil that goes into the question about whether to say it. It just never seemed personally interesting. Which isn’t to say they’re not in love or I don’t want them to find romance, but doing a story like that never appealed to me.”

As big as the moment was for the duo—especially Jonah, who then excitedly shared the news with Garrett (Colton Dunn)—it won’t be a huge shift for their relationship. “Not in the short term,” Spitzer says. “By the time two people say they love each other, they’ve already loved each other for a while. The change is a mutual acknowledgement. It’s a nice moment for the relationship, and I think it shows the relationship has legs. But it doesn’t change their arc.”

Things are less clear for Dina (Lauren Ash) and Garrett, who slept together in “Lovebirds”…though she was unaware he was accidentally responsible for her birds getting lost.

“They go back to their general relationship,” Spitzer says. “This wasn’t the two of them falling back into dating again. That was a big question as we were breaking it: ‘Are they back together again? What does that mean? Are people going to be disappointed when comes the next episode, they’re not a thing anymore?’ But we do revisit their sexual tension in the future.”
