LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT returns on Thursday, September 26 with the first of two sizable episodes. Ahead of the premiere, we’re sharing a few vague teases about what’s ahead…

  • SVU is beating the record previously held by GUNSMOKE (and LAW & ORDER) for longest-running primetime drama with season 21, and the show makes a cheeky nod to that fact in the premiere.
  • Three different characters find themselves at a major professional crossroad…but not all of the decisions are voluntary.
  • Ian McShane’s character may be more than a little unnerving, but he also has some intriguing advice for Olivia.
  • Olivia, Fin, and Amanda undergo an immersive interview technique, which brings past trauma to the forefront.
  • The first couple of episodes have a pattern to their pre-intro scenes that I’m very intrigued to see if they keep going all season.
  • Ariel Winter’s turn in the second episode (which airs Thursday, October 3) is one of my favorite guest spots in recent years. The role is complex and layered, and Winter steps up to the challenge.

Here are NBC’s teases for the episodes:

“I’M GOING TO MAKE YOU A STAR” (Thursday, Sep. 26 at 10 p.m. ET/PT)
When an actress accuses a high-powered media mogul of attempted rape, Benson finds herself in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse. Changes in the squad room put Carisi between a rock and a hard place. Ian McShane, Peter Gallagher, Zuleikha Robinson and Jamie Gray Hyder guest star.

“THE DARKEST JOURNEY HOME” (Thursday, Oct. 3 at 10 p.m. ET/PT)
Benson works with a young woman to help her remember the details and suspects in her rape. In order to learn a new witness interview technique, Rollins and Fin have to experience it for themselves. Ariel Winter and Amy Hargreaves guest star.
