[Warning: This post contains spoilers for the SUPERSTORE fall finale.]

SUPERSTORE’s Cloud 9 employees seemed to get a big break when the corporate overlords agreed to their contract terms to make their work life easier…but things weren’t exactly as they seemed.

As Jonah (Ben Feldman) and Sandra (Kaliko Kauahi) celebrated their victory with their colleagues, Amy (America Ferrera) got a call from Maya (Justina Machado)—who broke the news that Cloud 9 had new owners, and the new contracts were essentially void.

So what comes next? SUPERSTORE bosses Jonathan Green and Gabe Miller answered a few burning questions via email to tease what’s ahead in 2020…

How long will it take for Jonah, Sandra, etc., to learn they were essentially played? What can you preview about how they’ll be moving forward after this significant step back?
The news will get out pretty quickly, but while Jonah licks his wounds and starts to look for another outlet for his “cause energy,” most of the others turn their attention to speculating about how things might change under new ownership. Some are concerned, but others are optimistic that their work lives might improve to the point where they won’t need a union.

Amy has been toeing a delicate line of trying to help her colleagues, while still playing the corporate game with Maya. How will this new ownership (and perhaps extra attention as the new bosses come on) change things? Will this added stress impact the Jonah/Amy relationship?
Amy will definitely strive to make a good first impression with Zephra, and in the early days of the acquisition she’s reluctant to make waves. But Jonah has a different point of view about what it means to “get off on the right foot” with the new owners, and this will lead to some tension between them.

The store’s new ownership seems like it could have wider repercussions beyond just halting the unionizing. How will Zephra be changing the Cloud 9ers’ day-to-day life?
Since Zephra is a tech company, some new technology and tech-company perks will be introduced into the world of Cloud 9. The employees will have to adjust to working for an entirely different kind of company.

Is there anything else you can tease about what’s ahead in 2020?
Some highlights: a “men’s rights” protest in the store, a power struggle between Dina and Glenn, a new job for Mateo, a side hustle for Cheyenne… and Sandra and Jerry’s long-awaited wedding!
