THE VOICE held its first “live” show of the season…with a twist.

With production around the country shut down, the 17 finalists performed their numbers that aired during the Monday, May 4 episode from home, with coaches Blake Shelton, John Legend, Kelly Clarkson, and Nick Jonas offering advice and feedback from their respective houses. (Host Carson Daly was on a makeshift stage with a tiny crew.)

“There’s no way around it—this is super weird,” Shelton said in a post-show interview with Daly, in the video below. “But it’s a way that we can keep the show going, and keep the kids in front of America, and they still get their opportunity, still get their chance…it’s tough. There’s no way around it. It just brings another element of how hard this show can be and how hard we all work to be a part of it.”

“The singing was the thing that was the constant for me, because we asked these young artists to do something that’s really difficult: sing in front of no audience with no energy in the room, set up your own lighting, set up your own camera, set up your own mic,” Legend added. “And they sounded great…[Plus,] it simulates the way a lot of young artists are being discovered.”

For Jonas, who is in his first season with the show, he joked he didn’t “know anything else at this moment” of going live. But with the world so shut down, “it was really special to collaborate with THE VOICE, with NBC, and the other coaches on how we could make the show special for people at home,” he said. “At a time when I feel like this show provides a lot of encouragement and inspiration for people…I’m hopeful this can bring smiles to people’s faces.”

Clarkson, who has also been filming remotely for her talk show THE KELLY CLARKSON SHOW, pointed out that despite the hiccups, “the show is called THE VOICE. I know what attracted me to be on the show is it is about the voice…[with this different kind of set-up,] you still hear how people sound.”
