When SONGLAND’s first season aired in 2019, the series found a number of incredible songs, and its inaugural slate of artists had different responses to them.

John Legend, already in the NBC family, partnered with the network for a memorable campaign. A number of songs went to number one on iTunes charts; another was specifically designed for a FAST & THE FURIOUS film. The Black Eyed Peas went above and beyond and took all of the final songs for the will.i.am episode. On the flip side, Charlie Puth ended up not releasing his chosen song after the show aired.

As the show went into its second season, they “refined our process to set ourselves up for success,” SONGLAND executive producer Audrey Morrissey explains in the video below. “[The artists] are not required to release a song. They know that’s the premise of the show and that’s what we want. They’ll definitely record it and we’ll show them performing it on the show. But they don’t have to release it.” (Morrissey also explains that Puth not recording his song made sense to the producers: He was a part of the show’s pilot, shot 18 months prior to the series airing, and “creatively, he had changed.”)

Morrissey explains more in the video below…

Already there’s been significant success with their new method: In addition to a number of season 2 songs hitting number one, Lady Antebellum made their choice, “Champagne Night,” their new single and performed it on THE TONIGHT SHOW.

SONGLAND, Mondays, 10/9c, NBC
