THE TWILIGHT ZONE’s second season was star-studded—with the show boasting Morena Baccarin, Kylie Bunbury, Jenna Elfman, Ethan Embry, Sky Ferreira, Tavi Gevinson, Topher Grace, Tony Hale, Gillian Jacobs, David Krumholtz, Thomas Lennon, Sophia Macy, Natalie Martinez, Joel McHale, Chris Meloni, Gretchen Mol, Paula Newsome, Billy Porter, Jimmi Simpson, Jurnee Smollett, Daniel Sunjata, and Damon Wayans Jr. in the ten episodes—but like every anthology series, there were high and low points.
We ranked the season 2 episodes (from worst to best), but note this is spoilery for the installments and the twists may be discussed…
#4: "Try, Try"
CBS All Access' take: When the quick-witted Claudia (Kylie Bunbury) has a chance run-in with Mark (Topher Grace) at a museum, he dazzles her with his seemingly miraculous abilities. But after the true source of his charisma is revealed, the encounter takes a dark turn. Written by Alex Rubens, directed by Jennifer McGowan.
Our take: The initial GROUNDHOG'S DAY twist grounded the episode in a sense of darkness—even before Mark started revealing the truth depths of how far he had gone with this, the mental torture of being the only person aware you were reliving the day is a lot—but it ended up just being the stage for the true exploration of toxic masculinity. Bunbury and Grace excelled as they moved from a cautious meet-cute to Claudia's growing concern as Mark pushed limits...to his defiant breakdown as he taunted her, while she finally got the better of him.
