Though ARROWverse fans have gotten glimpses of Clark Kent, aka Superman (Tyler Hoechlin), and Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch), when the duo lead their own series in 2021, things will be very different.

“Clark and Lois are married in this version,” SUPERMAN & LOIS boss Todd Helbing said during the show’s DC Fandome panel. “And they’re not only married, they have two teenage boys.”

The cause for the change, naturally, was “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” the franchise-spanning crossover that merged the multiverse and altered timelines.

“At the beginning of last crossover, Clark and Lois had a little infant boy named Jonathan. And the worlds merged and everything gets rewritten,” Helbing explained. “And the end of the crossover is Lois calling Clark saying that he has to get home because there’s a problem with the boys. So we took ‘Crisis’ as an opportunity to really age up and change things for them as parents, age up the boys—or create two boys, fraternal twins, and then make them teenagers…when things really get complicated for parents. ‘Crisis,’ in general really gave us an opportunity to start with a blank slate and tell the story in a way that we couldn’t have otherwise.”

“As a father who happens to have two boys, [giving them sons] felt like a really great way to bring in some personal experience,” he continued. “And [it allows us] just to tell a story that is as grounded as it can possibly be and have Superman in it. And, as a couple, we really get to lean into Clark and Lois not being Superman and one of the most famous journalists in the world, but really as parents. What is that like when you have jobs like that [and you’re trying to parent]? And, speaking from experience, my boys are wildly different. So we want to present two kids that had completely different skill sets. And how do you deal with that as parents?”

Lois and Clark will also be adjusting to life back in Smallville in The CW series. “The story of Superman [has taken] place in Metropolis for [a] very long [time],” Helbing said. “Obviously, there was a SMALLVILLE series. But I came from a small town in the Midwest and the town that I grew up in had a business leave that [impacted] everybody in the town, and the town start to slowly dry up. So we want to tell a story where you have parents, after this tragic event happens, move back to Smallville, and really find that it’s easier to raise kids maybe in a place where life isn’t so hectic, as it is in Metropolis.”
