Seriously?!

The final moments of GREY’S ANATOMY’s season 17 two-hour premiere delivered a one-two punch, as Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) was found unconscious in the parking lot, after leaving yet another shift at work during the pandemic.

But, more alarmingly—and even more shocking—was the show then flashed to Meredith on a beach…reuniting with her long-dead husband, Derek (Patrick Dempsey). No, as the teaser for the next episode teased, we’re not McDreaming.

“It was so fun, because we know that people are going to freak out,” Pompeo told Jimmy Kimmel on Thursday’s JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE. “And we all know 2020 has been a really long, ugly road, and we were so happy just to be able to film these scenes and know how much joy it was going to bring people—we definitely had a ball.”

With Pompeo at the end of her contract this year (and no public decision made about whether she’ll continue on), she acknowledged. “the show has gone on for 17 seasons, and we don’t know how much longer it’s going to go,” to GOOD MORNING AMERICA. “We really want to pay homage to the series as a whole. So we started talking about who would bring back. One of the most important people in Meredith’s life is Derek, so it was a no-brainer.”

To get Dempsey back, she “reached out to Patrick. And we went for a nice hike and we had a long walk and talked about it. And we said, people are just going to love this. We have the opportunity to bring smile to people’s faces during 2020, we have to do this.”

What did you think of Meredith and Derek’s reunion so far?
