NEW AMSTERDAM’s third season jumped ahead of the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic—but the virus still took a toll on one of their own.

In opening montage of “The New Normal,” Dr. Vijay Kapoor (Anupam Kher) was shown feeling ill, progressively getting worse, until he was intubated. While he was able to be weaned off, Max (Ryan Eggold) was warned this was just the start of his fight, as Vijay’s heart was damaged.

“He’s not out of the woods,” Eggold admits in the video below. “His life is sort of hanging in the balance, and I think it’s scary for these for this group of characters, because you’re trying to keep everybody safe and here’s one of your own doctors come down with [COVID] and you can’t. You can’t protect everyone, and you can’t save everyone and it just hits so close to home. So I think it’s a reminder that we’re not invincible. And that even our best is challenged, sometimes. So, yeah, he’s in a very precarious place when we begin the season.”

Which leads to Max calling an old friend: Dr. Floyd Reynolds (Jocko Sims).
