Let’s talk about Monday night’s TV!

THE REPUBLIC OF SARAH: It was really smart of the kids to stage a protest and realistic. (Just like it was, unfortunately, realistic for the bigger protest to lead to the National Guard to cross the line with the peaceful demonstration.)

This may seem small, but I really, really, really appreciated that Piper stood up to Ellen. It would be so easy for her to be an easily disposable character: Corinne and Danny is a minefield that is ready to go off, for better or worse, and clearly Danny’s ties are to his hometown, even if he doesn’t want them to be. Piper could easily be a part of his Other Life that he dropped when things got messy. And it would so ridiculously cliche—but, again, easy—to make her selfish, bad, etc. Instead, she stood all the way up for her fiance against his mother and made it clear she is going to protect him. (Also, Luke Mitchell was brilliant as Danny battled with his trauma from his mother’s rage.)

I’m also glad Sarah and Grover talked about his mental health issues in the aftermath of losing his wife. I don’t blame him for destroying his house himself to exercise some kind of control, but it was dangerous as hell, especially at a time when they’re so isolated from everyone else.
