With Emily VanCamp exiting THE RESIDENT—with no clear exit laid out in the season 4 finale—season 5 delayed Nic’s departure a bit.

In the season 5 premiere, Nic was off-screen, going on a spa retreat, while her husband, Conrad (Matt Czuchry),  took care of their infant daughter, GiGi. And while he tried to convince Nic they were okay (via a phone call, in which VanCamp reprised her role), she got worried and threatened to return back.

During the course of a crazy day at the hospital—which included their systems being taken down by ransomeware—Conrad missed a call from his wife. When he got home, he sent her a message, apologizing for missing her, and tended to his daughter, who was very fond of saying “mama”…until she finally gave him a “dada.”

Conrad promised GiGi her mom would be back soon—but it’s still TBD if he’ll be able to keep that promise.

THE RESIDENT, Tuesdays, 8/7c, Fox
