On the Tuesday, September 28 episode of FBI, the team faces an unexpectedly dangerous foe: a hacker who is disabling equipment at local hospitals. To return the machines back to their normal function, they are asking for an investigation into a psychiatric facility.

But the case is personal to the team: “We’ll catch up Jubal’s son, and his illness, in episode 2,” showrunner Rick Eid teased via email. “In fact, his son’s illness is a major component of that episode.”

With Jubal’s (Jeremy Sisto) son, Tyler (Caleb Reese Paul), awaiting surgery at an impacted hospital, it leaves Isobel (Alana De La Garza) in a tough spot about how to handle her agent.

“As the boss, she is responsible to make sure that nothing goes wrong and that we don’t jeopardize everybody else in the situation,” De La Garza notes. “And that we don’t jeopardize Jubal and his job with him being so emotionally invested…There’s real pressure that she’s under to make the right call, to not pull him out if she doesn’t have to—but to pull him out if he’s too emotionally invested. I can’t imagine actually being in that situation, in real life, so it’s just a giant pressure cooker.”

“That’s what I love about the dynamic of this—they really look out for each other in these situations and call each other out,” she continues. “They look each other in the eyes and go, ‘Hey, I think you’ve got to step back.’ And he’s done the same thing to Isobel, in different episodes. So I love that.”

The personal tie takes its toll on Isobel, as she juggles the reality of her responsibilities. “She also has a friendship with Jubal, so she is protective of him and his family; you would imagine that she knows this kid,” De La Garza says. “I think she has so much pressure on top of her to make the right decision…She has to think about the other people’s children that are in the hospital or the other people that are going to be stranded and hurting. So it’s a very tough call.”

Despite the difficult nature of the hour, De La Garza calls the “Hacktivist” storyline “one of my favorites that we’ve done.”

“It is so emotional,” she says. “It’s such a personal journey for Jubal. And as a parent, you can’t help [but feel that]…I literally tear up thinking about this situation. I just loved the emotion that we could all explore. Isobel really has to keep it together—and also be able to look at her friend that is hurting and in pain. Try and not only help Jubal’s son, but help everybody else that’s affected by these takeovers.”

“I thought it was a really, really well done, well-written, well executed episode that I think people are going to enjoy,” she continues. “You’re going to get your heartstrings pulled. And in true Wolf Pack fashion, you’re on an accelerated thrill ride with Jubal, as well. It was a really, really interesting and fun story.”
