The show went on for SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE on Saturday, December 18—albeit not exactly as planned.

With COVID-19 cases rising, the show opted to do a scaled back show with no audience, and “limited cast and crew”…which meant they planned to air the few pre-taped numbers they completed pre-air and classic holiday sketches. As such, musical guest Charlie XCX was cut from the show, and host Paul Rudd didn’t do an opening monologue.

“There was a whole show planned, and I just can’t believe I’m not going to get my Five-Timer jacket,” Rudd said. But he got it anyway, thanks to guests Tom Hanks and Tina Fey, plus a video message from Steve Martin and Martin Short, as well as long-time cast member Kenan Thompson.

Before they rolled the first pre-taped segment of the night, Rudd joked, “It’s going to be a little bit like that new Beatles documentary: lot of old footage, but enough new stuff, you’re like, ‘I’ll watch that.'”
