SUPERNATURAL at Comic-Con: Live-Blog

July 27, 2014 by

SUPERNATURAL is returning to Comic-Con to celebrate its tenth season, and its stars and executive producer will be on hand in Hall H to talk about the show.

I’ll be live-blogging everything that goes down starting at 10 AM PT, and in the meantime, here’s the official panel description..

“Series stars Jared Padalecki (Friday the 13th [2009]), Jensen Ackles (My Bloody Valentine 3D), Misha Collins (Ringer), and Mark A. Sheppard (Battlestar Galactica), along with executive producer Jeremy Carver (U.S. version of Being Human), return to Hall H to answer questions from the audience about what’s in store for the tenth season of this exciting series, including their upcoming 200th episode! Fans will also be treated to an exclusive video presentation featuring series highlights, as well as a portion of the special features from the upcoming Supernatural: The Complete Ninth Season DVD and Blu-ray release on September 9. The tenth season of Supernatural will premiere this fall in its Tuesday time period at 9/8c on The CW. The series is produced by Wonderland Sound and Vision in association with Warner Bros. Television. ”

10:02 AM: And things are starting! WB publicist Holly Ollis is touting the upcoming 10th season and 200th episode.

10:05 AM: Ackles has come out to intro the new sizzle reel and new footage for us. “I’m really nervous right now,” he says.

“This is when we see Dean confronting Sam for the first time since he was turned into a demon,” Ackles teases.

10:10 AM: Um, and the scene is crazy intense. The Wichesters are fighting with weapons. Wow.

10:12 AM: Panelist intro time! Time for things to officially kick off.

10:12 AM: Who’s getting the car? “Demon Dean gets the car,” Ackles says. “But unfortunately Demon Dean doesn’t care about the car as much.”

10:13 AM: Sheppard is pointing out his lack of action figure. So the guys whipped him up something in the green room.

10:14 AM: “Sam in particular digs into how to recuse his brother from being a demon,” Carver says. “And Dean, who is a demon, struggles with what that means.” He calls it “fun” and then realizes maybe that’s not the right word.

10:15 AM: “It’s a real joy to see Ackles flex those same muscles,” Padalecki says of Dean getting possessed.

Ackles says it was challenging to direct his first time playing Dean. But he says that, “Demon Dean was a little bit easier [to direct] because he was tied up most of the time.”

10:17 AM: “Castiel’s grace is fading. He’s getting weaker…early on in the season –”  Collins starts before getting interrupted by Sheppard putting his “doll” on top of Funko Castiel. “Stop making our dolls mate,” he chides Sheppard.

Collins notes that he is more concerned about saving Dean than getting his own grace back.

10:18 AM: “This is so uncool,” Sheppard says of not having a doll.

“I don’t think we’ll have any idea of that until we see the first three or four seasons to come,” Sheppard says of how Crowley will react to Demon Dean.

10:20 AM: On the 200th episode:”We’ve been describing the episode as musical-ish,” Carver says. “It’s very much SUPERNATURAL’s own spin on [the topic]…it’s very much what we would consider to be a love letter to the fans.”

And fans won’t have to wait until the 200th to see some music on the show:  “Apparently Demon Dean likes to karaoke,” Ackles teases.

10:23 AM: “We would not be here if it were not for you,” Padalecki says when asked about the show’s long run. “So thank you very much.”

“Dude, we might get picked up to do a season or something,” what Padalecki recalls himself and Ackles thought while filming the pilot.

10:24 AM: Padalecki walked by fans last night who were waiting in line. He calls it “very healthy, clean fun” in the line — he expected it to be a “hippie commune.”

10:25 AM: “This has been your entire adult life,” Collins says of how odd it is to see early photos of the guys. He says there’s a new generation of fans now, who were too young to watch at the start.

Ackles says they had a waiter last night who told them he grew up watching the show. “Grew up watching our show? How old are you?'” he recalls asking. “’22.’ ’22? Get away from me you manchild!'”

10:27 AM: Collins on having William Shatner on SUPERNATURAL: “I think that would be great. Obviously he would have to audition with everybody else.”

10:29 AM: Why does Dean have so many great bromances?

“Everybody wants a piece of Dean,” Ackles says. “He’s just the kind of guy to have around if you’re in a jam.”

“Or if you want to jam,” Padalecki cracks.

“I like Demon Dean…Demon Dean is the best thing that’s happened to me,” Sheppard adds.

10:32 AM: “The difference between Sam at his core and Dean at his core has driven SUPERNATURAL in its earlier seasons…and has echoed in the later ones,” Padalecki says.

“Sam has been to hell and back, and it’s been an amazing run to explore those sides of Sam and explore those sides of SUPERNATURAL,” he adds.

10:34 AM: Fan question time! First fan is dressed up as Castiel. She asks about the CONSTANTINE, whom the writers loosely based Castiel on.

“I think we have squatter’s rights,” Collins says.

10:35 AM: Padalecki makes a cheesy joke and the panelists cringe.

“For ten years,” Ackles says. “For ten years I’ve listened to those jokes. And they’re still not funny.”

10:36 AM: Would Collins be up for a spinoff? “Personally, I think the strongest move would be to make it a very Sam and Dean-centric spinoff, and leave me alone to handle the next 10 seasons,” Collins says.

10:38 AM: Osric Chau crashes the panel! “So when is Kevin coming back?” he asks Carver.

10:39 AM: What are their bucket lists?

Padalecki: “My bucket list is ten more Hall Hs at Comic-Con.”

Sheppard: “My bucket list? Try not to die in season 10.”

Padalecki: “That conflicts with Jensen’s bucket list, which is to kill Mark Sheppard in season 10.”

When Collins is asked for his bucket list, he defers to Carver, who says Castiel’s top priorities are: “Number one is search for Dean and stay alive.”

10:43 AM: “You can expect a very heavy dose of new and returning very strong and very powerful women,” Carver says when asked if there will be any series regular roles for women next season.

10:44 AM: “What are the physical challenges? Not getting hurt.” – Ackles on doing fight scenes and those challenges.

Ackles is having a lot of action this week: Demon Dean fought and killed a guy on Tuesday, beat a guy close to death on Wednesday, and then on Thursday, killed a guy and beat another guy. Ackles jokes he was able to get all his anger and frustration out on set that week.

Collins and Padalecki echo praise the stunt team for their great work.

10:49 AM: A fan tries to ask a question and Padalecki interrupts her, and she gets a bit saucy with him — and Ackles gives her a standing ovation.

Did have they prank anyone this season?

“I was a little — concerned is the wrong word…but there was a part of me that thought Misha might try to do something to me while I was directing,” Ackles says. “And then I thought, he’s not that dumb.”

“I really did drop the ball on that…just because you’re not directing doesn’t mean you can’t be screwed over,” Collins says.

10:50 AM:Their characters’ dating profiles.

Padalecki: “Sam Winchester. Tall. Floppy hair. All past girlfriends have died. Tall again. Call if you’re interested. But be prepared to sign an affidavit.”

Collins: “I think Castiel’s would have to say something about his disrespect for people’s personal space.”

Ackles: “Rolling through town, no strings attached. Interested?”

Sheppard: “Hello, girls.” Or: “Hello, boys.”

Carver: “Have booty, will travel.”

10:55 AM: “Maybe the ghosts have seen our show and stayed away from us,” Padalecki says of believing in supernatural beings less since the show started.

Ackles says he’s always been a realist, but now, “It better not be a ghost because I will kill it.”

10:57 AM: Have they been typecast as manly men? “It’s still about the vulnerability that is common in both sexes,” Padalecki says. He points out he’s cried a lot more on SUPERNATURAL than on GILMORE GIRLS. He says Ackles was the same way with this show versus DAYS OF OUR LIVES.

10:58 AM: And we’re done! Time for the gag reel! Ackles thanks the fans, calling this the highlight of their year.
