AMERICA’S BEST DANCE CREW: Boys vs. Girls

February 20, 2009 by

During last night’s AMERICA’S BEST DANCE CREW the four remaining crews went head to head in a battle of the sexes. For the first time ever ABDC featured two all girl groups in the final four. The Best Freaks and The Fly Khicks have done the ladies proud all season long and now they are up against the two toughest all guy crews – Quest Crew and Strikers All Stars.

For the first time this season we got an opening routine featuring all four crews, and let me tell you…it was all kinds of kick ass. You have to love a number with full audience participation. I’ve searched around and haven’t been able to find the video to post. But if you get to see it in a repeat showing of the episode I think you’ll really dig it.

Last night’s challenge had the crews emulating the music videos of some of the top guy and gal superstars in the game today. Personally I think it was in poor taste for MTV to have crews representing both Chris Brown and Rhianna. There is so much sensativity around both those artists right now that the powers that be at MTV had to be making a conscious decision when picking these videos. I thought it was lousy, but what else is there to say. This is from the same network that is exploiting the Chris Brown/Rhianna situation so much that they are having a special documentary about thier relationship. Shame on you MTV.

Excuse me while I jump down off my soap box. Now let’s get to the dancing.

First up last night were my boys of Quest. Once again a stellar, all-around performance. Not only does Quest turn out the sickest moves every week but they always tell a story through their dance and never forget to bring the personality. While Shane was right, the Beat Freaks are on their ass, I think they deserve a spot in the final two. The part of the dance that go me hitting the rewind button on my TV were the synchronized handstand kicks (I’m sure there’s a technical AND B-Boy term for it, but you know what I mean). And Dominic’s, or sorry should I say D-Trix’s, hand spins at the end were out of control!

The Beat Freaks were sick this week, but I have to say this – and I know I’m going to be skewered for it – but I think the off the charts, crazy awesome opening to their routine perhaps clouded the judges views a bit. The rest I thought it was good but not that good. The part with the bats was sloppy and the head spin at the end while good went on for way too long and they weren’t as good as other crews could have done it. Now before you take one of those bats to my head, I need to say that because of that opening The Beat Freaks were for the second week in a row my favorite crew of the night. The isloations in that opening was one of the best things I’ve ever seen in dance. It’s going to be a serious battle if they go head to head against Quest in the finale.

The Strikers All Stars had a few hiccups tonight. The steppers had to bring a little more hip hop and b-boy into their routine and they struggled. Their routine wasn’t clean and a little all over the place. But they always bring a ton of energy and the sections where they were doing their stepping was, as always, incredible.

Fly Khicks haven’ impressed me much this season, but they have gotten better and better with each week. I just don’t think they hold a candle to Quest or the Beat Freaks. The other two crews bring some much originality and professionalism to the stage. While they try really hard I think the Fly Khicks don’t have the finishing touches to make their routines look clean. They did some fun tricks this week and semed to have a lot of fun, but they didn’t do it for me.

In the end, the banner fell for Strikers All Stars which came as a shocker to most everyone in the house, especially the Fly Khicks who I think felt it was the end of the road for them.

I’m gonna say it. I felt like they kept Fly Khicks to help ensure that there’s an all-girl team in the finals and I think that stinks. But between Fly Khicks and the All Stars, I think we know who is the weaker crew. I just feel like next week’s show could have been 10x more awesome had we had the three top teams having to tackle the most difficult dance moves.

Also, I agree about the Chris Brown thing. But I really love it when they do group dances. I kinda hate that we have to wait until we get down to four crews before we get to see that even though I know there’s just not enough time in the show to do it with more crews.
