It took nearly all season, but NEW GIRL’s Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and Nick (Jake Johnson) are finally engaged—and getting hitched ASAP. “They’re going to get married [in the two-part series finale],” Johnson confirms.

But the show will also pay homage to its past in a very unique way. “It was like going to a concert of a famous musician, whose career has spanned decades, and they get on stage, and you’re like, ‘I hope they play this.“ And then they get up there and go, ‘Tonight, we’re going to play all the hits,’” Max Greenfield (who plays Schmidt) explains. “And that’s what the finale felt like.”

The cast and creative team went into season 7 knowing it would be the comedy’s last season, but the actors didn’t know the ending upfront. “Early on in the show, we as a cast were involved more creatively,” Johnson says. “And then as the show became the show, there were so many writers who were talented and they just kind of took over.”

There is one storyline Johnson and Greenfield tried valiantly to get into the final season…with no success. “Season 7, Max and I were both really into Nick and Aaron Carter,” Johnson says with a laugh. “And we really pitched a storyline to [NEW GIRL creator] Liz [Meriwether] that the final 8 was them trying to figure out who is Nick and who is Aaron.”

“It would be a group text, but the [messages] would be Jake and I for 78 texts,” Greenfield adds. “And then Liz would finally come in at 3 AM and say, ‘Not into this, guys.’”
