“My Boys” Series Finale Redux

The following contains spoilers for the season finale of My Boys (December 2006). If you haven’t yet seen it, you might want to stop about…now.

Who out there is watching My Boys? Anyone? Well, if you are can we talk about the season finale for a minute? Let’s just cut to the good stuff, shall we? After being tortured with the overused baseball metaphors and Jordana Spiro’s horrible acting we finally get to the end when…ok, maybe we should back it up and revisit the plot for a minute.

The season finale of My Boys was all about the truth behind the self-created myths in our lives. For instance, Andy’s overbearing horrible wife, Meredith, the woman he is constantly bitching about turns out to be a cool and fun loving chick. SO much show that she threw him a surprise birthday party at Crowley’s, complete with his favorite imported beer and t-shirts. I mean t-shirts? Now that is a fun lady. It seems that Andy created this myth about the evil Meredith because he didn’t want to admit to PJ and the guys that he likes going home early because sometimes he just wants to spend a little QT with his wife and his little girl. Aw.

But that wasn’t the only myth we learned of in the season finale. It seems that PJ and Brandon studied the art of each other’s mouths once during college. The two seem to have different accounts as to what happened the day after, and hence the “myth” of the morning after needed to be fully explored. As PJ remembers, she saw Brendon in the library and he gave her the classic “What’s Up” blow off. Harsh, especially since they were best buds even back then. As Brendo remembers it, he had no chance for the blow off as he went skiing early the next morning. Hmmm, for two people that claim that the kiss was nothing, they sure do remember the next day very well – or at least one of them does.

PJ (Jordana Spiro) and Brendon (Reid Scott) from

The incessant jokes about their hookup won’t stop (basically because PJ won’t let it go), and Brendon becomes noticeably distant – to the point he even jumps on Craigslist to look for an apartment so he can eventually move out of PJ’s place.

In the end, PJ calls him on his sketchiness, and he breaks down and finally admits that yeah, he did give her the “What’s up” the morning after their smoochage. Why, you ask? Well it seems Brendo developed quite the thang for Miss PJ during Saved by the Bell My Boys: The College Years, and he was nervous it was going to ruin their friendship. PJ, being Miss Oblivious as always, assures him that he is one of the most important people in her life and that nothing could ever ruin their friendship. They bump shoulders, as guys and their tomboy best friends do, and both retreat to different parts of the apartment. The two are reunited just moments later when Jim Brendon walks into the kitchen and pulls Pam PJ in for an unexpected kiss. Pam PJ hesitates for a moment before giving in and kissing Jim Brendon back. The two break apart and stare into each other’s eyes….and cliffhanger.

I’m going to be honest here…I picked up on this ‘ship during the pilot episode and I’ve been waiting for it to play out every since. It wasn’t a shock at all but I still smiled like a school girl when he turned that corner and kissed her without any warning.

Brendon is my favorite of PJ’s boys. He’s sweet, sensitive, loves his rock and roll, and sports one of the hottest 5 o’clock shadows in all of primetime. Translation – he’s WAY too good for the shallow and immature PJ. Sorry, I know she’s the lead and we are supposed to like her, but I find myself watching the show despite her horrible acting. Jordana Spiro does NOT have the gift of comedic timing. She’s always just a little off, and despite being surrounded by better actors, she hasn’t approved much over the course of this season. Honestly, I think that the show would be so much better if that had a different lead actress. I know it’s harsh but it’s true – at least in my opinion. I think she holds back the show from being really great.

So did you watch the season finale? If so…what did you think of the hook-up? And am I the only one feeling this way about Jordan Spiro (PJ)? I know some of my GMMRers watch the show…are you pickin’ up what I’m puttin’ down here or am I way off on this one?

I’m so in love with this show. I really don’t get a bad acting vibe off of Jordana. I actually think she plays the subtleties of being a tomboy really well. She mirrors the men in her body language when with the boys, but transforms a little into a woman when on a date. But she forgets to talk like a woman on a date and that just makes me laugh. And she only allows herself to be really girlie around Stephanie.

As for her and Brendan, that was a page out of “Casino Night” and that made me love it more. She was surprised by his confession of feelings back then and oblivious to the fact that he still liked her. When she pulled away from the kiss, her expression was the “What just happened??”

I know classic TV form will be to do the on and off again, but I really hope they don’t do that. I hope they explore the awkwardness of two long term friends navigating a relationship.

this is the longest comment ever. hahah sorry! i think this show hits so close to home with me b/c i am PJ, i have a Brendan and a Bobby and a couple of Andys in my life.

I’m new to GMMR, but glad to have found it! I love your site, you do such a great job!

As far as My Boys goes, I have to say that I love it! That’s probably because I’m a tomboy sports nut and I’m so glad they finally made a show about girls like me! However, the baseball cliches do get a little tiresome and Jordana Spiro would not have been my pick to play PJ, but she has grown on me. I think Jordana will improve because she seems very dedicated to the role.

I have to say that I LOVE the PJ/Brendo hook-up! It was so Jim/Pam! But I have a feeling that, just like JAM, PJ will say no because she doesn’t want to ruin the friendship. Brendo is definitely my favorite of PJ’s boys and I think PJ and Brendo would be great together (better than PJ and Bobby). But I still wonder if Brendo is still rebounding from the whole Wendy debacle, and I don’t think he should be rebounding with PJ.

There is also a great (but short) interview with the cast of My Boys on Watch with Kristen, if you are interested.

Anyways, that’s my $.02, sorry it’s so long. I can’t wait for it to come back in the summer!

I really liked My Boys; TBS did well with it decision to run 5 new episodes this week I think. I know a couple of my friends that hadn’t seen it are hooked now.

As for Jordana, she may be the weakest link of the group but I think that she’s made PJ a stronger character as the shows progressed. She’s found a good rhythm with the rest of the cast. I don’t see a real spark with her and Bobby, and I hope that a PJ-Bendo pairing won’t throw off the timing off the group in a bad way, but things are defintely set up to be interesting moving ahead.

Thank you for posting this!!! 🙂

Jordana has grown on me. It’s so hard to really like the female character when all the guys are so great on the show.

Brendo & Bobby are my two fave guys. I want Bobby for myself! I have been hooked on him since he had small roles on What I Like About You and Related.

I’m excited to see how everything plays out in the next season. It’s either going to be really great between them or completely awkward. I’m hoping for great!

I think Jordana will get better with time.

  5. J on December 30th, 2006 9:05 pm

I’m not real happy about the unoriginality…because NOTHING will even top Jim & Pam, but that Brendo is near perfection! The show is fun, but being a Chicagoan, it’s trying a little too hard with all the references and how dare they make fun of Naperville! OK, well I like the dynamics and the guys are funny and then there is Brendan, yum.

GMMR– you know I love this show. I definitely squealed a little when I watched the finale. I don’t know if I completely agree about Miss Spiro, but you did bribng light to some interesting flaws I never noticed before– I am so easily entertained they never even dawned on me. Brendo is def one of my faves and I really think the guys make the show! How great was the guy from Scrubs btw!?

  7. Emmaxoxlee on December 31st, 2006 12:17 am

i love this show more and more.
i knew the PJ and Brendo thing HAD to happen.
and i was def. squealing as well.
PLUS brendo’s constant 5 oclock shadow is amazingly hott.

but i think that the characters have fallen into their roles and def. feel more comfortable. during the past 4 or so episodes i have found myself laughing out loud more and more.
the whole bathroom scenario with kenny and bobby was hilarious. and PJ scooting on the basketball across mikes apartment cracked me up..

ahhh. and im glad it shows that girls can be sports fanatics and tomboys and STILL be attractice and hott. wahoo. =)

  8. RC on December 31st, 2006 6:34 pm

I’ve never really noticed Jordana’s acting, so I guess it doesn’t bother me. I’m just glad to have found a show my husband enjoys watching with me. The fact that we are Chicagoans and he’s a HUGE Cubs fan helps.

I lived in Naperville for 6 years before moving a mile down the road to (less glamorous) Aurora. I love all the Chicago references, and I don’t even mind the constant baseball analogies.

The season finale was great, though I have to say I think Bobby is my favorite of the “boys.” I can hardly wait until next season.

  9. Hilary on January 1st, 2007 11:43 am

Okay, I’m glad I’m not the only one who realized that the end was just like The Office. It was almost exactly the same. Which was funny.

I’m not a big fan of Brendo and PJ being together. It just doesn’t seem right for the two of them. I wasn’t all happy or jumping-for-joy, I was like “okay?”. I never really wanted them together anyways. And I’m not huge fan of Jordana’s acting. Just, not a big fan of it.

I cannot wait for the nest season.

  10. Snow on January 1st, 2007 1:44 pm

I like this show. I didn’t see the PJ and Brendan hook-up coming as early as the pilot like GMMR, but I wondered why in the hell does PJ like Bobby when she’s got totally hot Brendo living with her! My only complaints about the show — Overused baseball metaphors, and PJ says “dude” way too often. Also, in the pilot, when Bobby was “freaked out” about PJ’s “aggressiveness” when they were in her bed so therefore he didn’t want to have sex with her?? Gimme a break — that was totally unrealistic! Otherwise, the shows characters seem genuine and their friendships ring true. Jordana’s acting seems fine to me. When is the next season?

  11. jenny on January 1st, 2007 9:18 pm

This show really won me over and I probably like the show a bit just because I was that girl out of college. Plus, I love the baseball and Wrigley references. My sister actually lives down the street from the bar that inspired Chumley’s so it’s all there for me.

As for PJ and Brendan, I know it was very Jim/Pam too but I loved it anyway — the way he just came out of his room and kissed her? Rocked.

Glad you’re giving some attention to this show!

  12. Emita on January 2nd, 2007 3:19 am

Jordana Spiro is awesome. You wouldnt know good acting if it beat the crap out of you.

  13. Lostie on January 2nd, 2007 10:26 am

Looks like EMITA gets the award for most insightful comment. Emita, you must not hang around GMMR much because we don’t usually play that way around here. Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion, but we try not to lower ourselves to that type of nastiness.

That being said, I respectfully disagree with GMMR on her thoughts on Jordana. I thought she was really weak at the beginning of the season, but I feel she has improved over time.

Great ending. When do the new episodes begin?

  14. jDub on January 2nd, 2007 12:07 pm

This show is one of my favorites now. I really like all of the characters and the way they interact. I love the moments with PJ and the guys, but I also love it when she and Stephanie hang out (LOVE Stephanie). Perhaps some of the problem you have with Jordana’s acting is that she speaks slowly, and we are used to lightening-fast dialogue in our comedies. Her timing is unusual and I actually noticed that I was getting used to the slower pace. She’s mellow, especially compared to Mike. That’s why she and Brando are perfect. I don’t think it will ruin the friendship, I think it’s gonna be HOT. And all of the other guys (not Andy, of course) will be jealous.

  15. Marjo on January 3rd, 2007 1:40 pm

Started watching the show because J. Kaler is an old friend and classmate. Really like it! I have to say that PJ’s voice is the one thing that has really started to grate on me. Not sure why. It’s nasally and annoying – almost whiny. But I can work with it. I think the show will only get better. Great writing!!

  16. Tanta on January 3rd, 2007 2:26 pm

Yeah, definitely knew Brendan was going to be The One from the moment he made a grand late entrance to the first poker game…but so what? Some shows are just meant to be light and fluffy.

This series came at the perfect time — no other shows were airing and they packed in all the eps.

I’m working at getting some co-workers hooked now…

  17. eddie o on January 9th, 2007 9:07 am

Ditto to the comment about you woudnt know good acting if it hit you . j spiro is simply amazing in the role.

  18. shmeggers on January 9th, 2007 8:47 pm

does anyone know where i can get the video for the season finale? it’s the only ep i missed and i’m dying to see the brendo-pj kiss!

  19. kak on January 17th, 2007 9:10 pm

I love my boys! I think the writting is awsome I find myself constantly laughing out loud. The little remarks and comments made by all the characters is so funny. I love Jordana too. I think she plays PJ really well and connects with all the guys on the show. OMG and I love Brando! He’s so sexy. The whole Wendy thing was really bugging me the whole season cause I knew there was gonna be a thing with him and PJ… or at least I was hoping for it. That kiss was so hot too. I hope they keep the sexual tension between them next season by being together but keeping it a secret from the rest of the guys. Maybe Bobby will be jeleous when they find out… cause they gotta find out sometime. But Brando and PJ…. SO HOT. I cannot wait till next season. But I have no clue when it starts. It’s the first good show TBS has come up with. I love it!!

  20. mike on July 30th, 2007 11:09 pm

hey, i don’t mind the chicago references, in fact I think it’s really cool. I live in Hoffman Estates, the town that Andy just moved to with his wife in the new episode. Hoffman doesn’t get much recognition, so it was really cool to hear it on national TV. It’s a great show, except I’m a sox fan so it’s hard seeing all this cub stuff

  21. Rae L. on August 15th, 2007 2:05 am

I think that Jordana’s acting is really good. I think she is like a normal person and I LOVE her tomboy-iness. I just got into the show and have been dying to know what happened in the first season so thanks for posting this. The minute I watched the new season episodes on tbs.com I knew who was supposed to be together. Who else, but Pj and Brendon???? I am now hooked and of course tivo-ed! Still searching for My Boys 1st season clips so if anyone can help me out….that would be great!

    ~And yes, I’ve already tried youtube.com!

  22. Kirsten on November 20th, 2007 4:04 am

Guys, what about the season finale! I basically screamed at my comp. (I missed the finale on the tv). Gees, I was freaking out. I was going all frantic, like ‘who on earth did she take to italy’, and although I really hope it’s Brendan, that’s probably unrealistic cuz that would be too easy. I hate all the other guys, but I’m thinkin’ maybe Hank (brought back from the dead) or baseball dude (he is so ugly I want to hurl). The botanist is boring, and her ex-college boyfriend is fat, ugly, and…unappealing all around. Well, you’ve got my 411 on the subject, now, what do you guys think? All this crap about Jordana Spiro’s acting, I never even noticed, I just sort of thought ‘okay, she’s the lead, whatev’, but here you guys are all dishing on how she’s such a bad actress…can you guys be meaner? You get up there and act… ten bucks you suck. Well, one last thing…I hated the finale, it was so annoying. I hate waiting.

  23. Tisha on July 30th, 2008 2:13 pm

Hi newbie here. : ) Anyway, I’d like to commend you on giving such a great review of the season finale and thank you! I thought I was the only person that found Jordana’s acting chops weak and yes, PJ is immature and at times a little irritating. The other characters are what make it more intriguing and tolerable to watch IMHO. I also agree with what you said about the show having a different lead actress. *ducks under chair and hides from Jordana army

This is finding a bit a lot more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you swiftly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and one more set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by comparable artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great enjoyable, letting you locate others with shared tastes and becoming pals with them. You then can listen to a playlist designed based on an amalgamation of what all your buddies are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will likely be relieved to know it is possible to avoid the public from seeing your individual listening habits should you so choose.

Hey would you mind letting me know which webhost you’re working with? I’ve loaded your blog in 3 different internet browsers and I must say this blog loads a lot faster then most. Can you recommend a good internet hosting provider at a fair price? Cheers, I appreciate it!|
