The Strike is Over!! Hallelujah!!
February 10, 2008 by Kath Skerry
Barring any kind of completely bizarre and unforeseen incidents over the next few days, the WGA strike is over!! Writers agreed to the tentative deal put forth by the AMPTP and the WGA board and are expected to be back at work on Wednesday morning. Showrunners are back to work tomorrow!!
On Tuesday, WGA membership will be voting whether or not to remain on strike while the final vote is being ratified (which is a 10-12 day process). Assuming they vote to go back to work then come Wednesday morning their pens are back on paper (or more accurately, the MACs are up and running again). I’ve exchanged emails today with someone ‘in the know’ who said he would be “absolutely floored if the WGA opt to remain on strike during the ratification process, because people just want to get back to doing what they love – writing.”
As for the terms of the deal, well I would suggest you check out sites like United Hollywood and Deadline Hollywood as they are much better suited to explain what this all means. Based on what I’ve read, TV viewers might have less of an opportunity to watch full seasons of their favorite shows online for free at the network sites (and that’s not a given, just a hunch on my part), but other than that, we really won’t be affected by the terms of the new deal. A deal that WGA President Patric Verrone said is “…the best deal this guild has bargained for in 30 years.”
I’ll be busy doing an Irish jig in celebration, but if you’d like to join in on the party feel free to leave comment.

Glory halleluia! My personal life’s been in the pooper this weekend, but somehow, this news makes everything good again. Soon, we’ll get to see the “dinner party” episode of The Office. All is right in the world…
Kath, thanks SO much for helping us all survive this strike. I check out GMMR every day and love what you do!
Thank Jebus!!! I would imagine that writers are itching to get back to the shows they love, and won’t strike during the ratification process. Let’s hope.
Now, if only your next post was “Ben Silverman Apologizes For Being a Douche About FNL and Renews it for Season 3”!! Only then will I truly be able to relax.
whoooooo-hoooooooo!!!!
how long until we get an episode of the Office!?! i am already counting down the days!
Ditto on the “how soon til the Office” question. I’m so glad it’s over and the writers got what they needed, too.
I am okay with watching commercials or paying to see shows online, if it means the writers get a better shake.
(doing the irish jig here in NY)
I too am doing the jig! We miss you Office…come back!
Thank goodness, I was beginning to tune into way too many reality shows. Bring on some writing so that I can get my intellect back!
THANK. GOD.
…Is all I have to say.
SQUUUEEEEE!
I have had entirely too much free time lately. Must. have. television!
I’m also really glad people in Hollywood can finally start supporting their families again.
