GREEK Rush Week: Day 2 – Getting to Know GREEK Row

August 4, 2009 by

UPDATE: I’m going to keep the Day 2 GREEK Prize Pack open another full day!  You know have until 11:59pm EST on August 5th to enter.

——————————–

It’s Day 2 of  GREEK Rush Week, and if you want a shot to be part of the Campus Rhodes Greek system you’re going to need to know who’s who on GREEK Row.  Who are the big players that control the best houses on campus?

As today’s Rush Week lesson, here’s a little guide to the people and places that you need to know to get ahead.

Make sure you read until the end of our guide as we’ve got another GREEK Rush Week Prize Pack to giveaway. GMMR reader Debbie won yesterday’s giveaway.  Will you be today’s winner?  More at the end of this post.

The Houses

  • Zeta Beta Zeta (aka ZBZ, Zeta Beta)
Considered the best sorority house on campus, ZBZ is home to many of our favorite sisters including Casey Cartwright, Ashleigh Howard and Rebecca Logan. There is a long legacy of tradition within this sisterhood, and let’s just say their alums always have an ear in the house. The ZBZs are known for being fiercely loyal…except when they’re not.
  • Omega Chi Delta (aka Omega Chi, O Chi)
As far as frats go, many consider Omega Chi to be at the top of the heap. Academics, athletics, and networking are high on the Omega Chi priority list. As is socializing with the ZBZ sisters.  Evan Chambers and Calvin Owens are among Omega Chi’s many upstanding brothers.
  • Kappa Tau Gamma (aka Kappa Tau, KT)
If you’re looking for a good time, look no further than the KT house. Just watch “Animal House” and you might have a sense as to what being a Kappa Tau is all about.  Led my the industrious Cappie, the KT traditions center less around values and more around beer…and girls…and sleep. Rusty is just one of the many KT brother worth getting to know.  But for me, I say no Kappa Tau visit is complete without catching up with Beaver and of course, Jeremy!
  • Iota Kappa Iota (aka I Kap, IKI, Icky)
If you’re just getting aquainted with the GREEK way of life, I wouldn’t worry too much about the IKI’s right now.  But give it a little time and you’ll know what they are all about.

Who You Need to Know on GREEK Row…

Casey Cartwright
The consummate sorority operator and ultimate “it” girl, Casey has it all — looks, brains and she’s a leader in the best sorority on campus, ZBZ.  But there’s more to life than just picking out the perfect outfit. There’s Evan to think about. And Cappie. And of course there’s her little brother, Rusty. She’s the golden girl with the golden touch. But what happens to this Greek goddess when her perfect world implodes?

Ashleigh Howard
Loyal and adoring, Ashleigh is Casey’s best friend and her biggest fan. Main strengths? A sunny personality and ability to see the positives in any situation.  Her Achilles heel? Taste in men. Is he mean? Unavailable? Gay? That’s the guy she’ll go for.  And if you know what’s good for you, you won’t come between Ashleigh and a sale. She’s not all that great with her credit cards. It’s fun to watch her struggle, anyway.

Rebecca Logan
As a Senator’s daughter, it was easy for Rebecca to get into ZBZ, but things have been bumpy every since.  She made a powerful enemy when she went head-to-head with Casey. Rebecca seems to enjoy watching Casey struggle – not very nice for someone is suppose to be a sister. Known for getting what she wants, Beccs is for the first time learning what it means to have friends. Will the ZBZs help mend her evil ways?  Is her family weighing her down or is she genetically predisposed to being a diva?

Frannie Morgan
As president of ZBZ, Frannie made Machiavellian power plays a part of life.  That was good for her allies…hell for her foes.  But when things don’t go according to her carefully laid out plans, it’s not always easy to know where Frannie’s loyalties really lie. Is she a true ZBZ sister through and through? Will she always be there for her sorority little sister, Casey?  Time will tell.

Evan Chambers
Blessed with wealth, power and good looks, Evan seems like the golden boy who has it all.  But even golden boys have their problems.  Family demands weigh heavy upon his shoulder.  Will Evan learn to stand up and be his own man, or will he follow his family’s party line — even when it’s not what he wants?

Calvin Owens
Being a legacy at uber-preppy Omega Chi made pledging not only easy but inevitable for Calvin. His athletic skills and ability to get along with anyone, anywhere have made him popular.  But once he’s outed, he’s not so sure where he stands.  It’s up to Calvin to figure out just what it means to be an Omega Chi brother.

Cappie
The president of Kappa Tau and…that’s about it. But that’s all Cappie needs. Confident about who he is, with no apparent fear of the future, Cappie’s a guy who lives in the now, enjoys everything, and sees no need to move on. He’s happy on campus and that’s where he’ll stay until he’s physically removed or runs out of new majors to try…whichever comes first.

Rusty Cartwright
Having spent his formative year playing by the rules, Rusty’s decided to ditch his social underdog status by pledging a fraternity. And not just any frat, but Kappa Tua, the ultimate party house.  But as much as Rusty wants to be just one of the guys, old habits die hard.  He’s a geek to his core and forever handicapped by his naivete. That’s good when it comes to moral choices, bad when it comes to most anything else.  Good thing Cap’s got his back.

…and then there’s Dale

Dale Kettlewell
Doom. Gloom. Apocalyptic sightings. Virginity until marriage. And a strident anti-Greek streak. That’s Rusty’s Freshman year roommate and fellow honors engineering student, Dale.  He can’t stand that Rusty wants to have a life beyond the lab. But he’s crazy about Mom, Dad, apple pie and his purity pledge.  Oh and he has his eye on Rusty’s big sister, Casey.  Get in line, Dale.

So now that you know a little bit more about GREEK life and some of it’s most popular faces, where do you think YOU fit in?

I’d pledge ZBZ … of course!

They have a gorgeous house, funny and beautiful sisters, and they party with the Kappa Taus. What’s not to love?

  2. Erin on August 4th, 2009 5:16 pm

ZBZ’s are pretty awesome, but I think I’d pull a Twelfth Night and infiltrate Kappa Tau incognito. They clearly have the best in-house relationships out of any other frat or sorority we’ve seen. More than the zaniness and drinking they have honest affection and deep loyalty for each other. Hands down best house to be in.

Oh, and Beaver can be my roommate.

  3. Jaime on August 4th, 2009 5:16 pm

I’d have to be a ZBZ – for one thing, Ashleigh runs her house better than Frannie – plus there’s the fact that, you know, IKI won’t be around long. 😛 Plus, thanks to Casey, we’d have complete access to the Kappa Taus, and I could finally put my plan of seducing Cappie into action.

  4. Megan on August 4th, 2009 5:29 pm

I would join Dale’s purity group before any of them because Dale is my favorite part of every episode, besides Cappie of course.

  5. Plin on August 4th, 2009 5:31 pm

ZBZ–they have the best parties, access to all the best fraternities, and the best-looking hasher. What more could a girl want?

  6. Erica on August 4th, 2009 5:33 pm

I would proly pledge whatever CRU sorority is the jock girls sorority if they have one. I was an athlete in college and don’t think I could be around all that pink in the zbz house. I’m a lot like Jordan. Though I would suck it up if
I had to just to party with the kappa taus.

  7. Randi on August 4th, 2009 5:53 pm

If it were up to me, I’d join Kappa Tau! I know I’m a girl, but I still want to be a KT!!

  8. ~Michelle~ on August 4th, 2009 5:56 pm

Geez, I dunno which I would join – none of them sound like my geeky Greeky girls I went to college with. Am very intrigued by the show, since I don’t get cable (and thus am too cheapo to go to iTunes)… 🙂

  9. Vanessa on August 4th, 2009 6:12 pm

Apparently this is the popular opinion, but I would want to be a part of Kappa Tau even though I’m a girl! They just know how to have a good time, but you can still see the bonds of brotherhood showing through. ZBZ is definitely a strong choice for a soroity though!

I caught up by purchasing chapters 1 and 2 on DVD then watching chapter 3 on abcfamily.com. I don’t know if the episodes from the first two chapters are online, but I think they might be. No excuse as these eps are free! This worked out quite well until I got to the last episode of the season, which ABC Family didn’t have on their website! After a bit of freaking out, I ended up buying it on iTunes, letting the episode download overnight, then waking up early before work to watch the episode! It was totally worth it though! It took me about 10 days to plow through all the episodes. Totally worth the lack of sleep!

  10. Kelly on August 4th, 2009 6:24 pm

I watched the first four eps of Greek last night. Does it make me easy that after only spending a few hours with Greek I want to marry it and have its adorable, funny, and possibly Cappie-shaped babies? Although I don’t think that’s legal in any of the 50 states. Maybe Guam? They’ve gotta be good for something.

Seriously, though, I am LOVING Greek! I had such preconceived notions that it would be a stupid teen show, but it’s anything but! It’s so sharply written and well-acted. I really didn’t think I would enjoy a show about fraternities and sororities, since I did my undergrad at a school that was 90% Greek and I was so over that scene by the time I graduated. What’s neat about Greek, though, is that the fraternies and sororities are just an awesome backdrop for all the action in the show — it’s not JUST about the frats and srats. If I had to pick a house to pledge, by default it would have to be ZBZ since that’s the only srat I’ve been introduced to in the first four eps. I’m not so certain I could take some of the cattiness, though! If there were a girl version that mixed the fun of Kappa Tau, the potential future contacts of Omega Chi, and the party planning fun of ZBZ, I think I’d def go for that one.

My goal is to catch up on both seasons before the third season starts up. Although to be perfectly honest, I can’t imagine it will take more than a week to finish all the eps. All day I couldn’t wait to get home and dive back into the drama! Thanks, Kath, for pointing me toward such an AWESOME show!

  11. strunkette on August 4th, 2009 6:24 pm

Um…which ever one would get me closer to Cappie 😉 All I see of tweets are Cappie this and Cappie that. I need to get to know that boy now! KT might be for the boys, but they’d make an exception for me right??

  12. Trisha on August 4th, 2009 7:15 pm

I would rush in ZBZ, because I think Casey and Ashleigh have a lot of heart, and are trying to do the right thing as leaders. I feel like they wouldn’t stab me in the back. Now if Frannie were still president, I don’t know…

  13. Blogette on August 4th, 2009 7:25 pm

ZBZ, if only to hang out with Ashleigh and Rebecca (and all of their awesomeness).

  14. Emily N. on August 4th, 2009 7:25 pm

Even though I’m a girl, I want to pledge the Kappa Tau’s (or the female equivalent) because I’m kind of like Rusty was. I generally “play by the rules” and I think joining the ultimate party house would be a good shock to my system.

  15. Diana on August 4th, 2009 7:47 pm

I gotta agree with some of the girls and say that I wish I could join the KTs, even though I’m a girl. Who wouldn’t want to hang out with Cappie, Beaver, Rusty and Wade all day? But since that would involve actually LIVING in that disgusting house, I’ll go with ZBZ. Best of both worlds: getting to be friends with Casey and Ashleigh and party with the Kappa Taus…I’d go back to college for that!

  16. Kyle on August 4th, 2009 8:11 pm

Sad to say, I think I’m stuck with Dale 😉 But it looks like the KT’s have the most fun 🙂

  17. Julia on August 4th, 2009 8:31 pm

Ummm, tough choice… I probably would never pledge ZBZ, too much pink, you know? So, if I met Cappie I would probably beg to be a KT, just because he is so awsome, but based on the traditions of the houses alone I would probably choose Omega Chi, mostly because of the networking benefits.

  18. Jocelyn on August 4th, 2009 8:37 pm

I’ve never been a girly girl, and the ZBZ house is pretty darn pink, so I think that’d be a culture shock – but that’s what college is all about, right? So, I’d be rushing the Zeta Beta’s, because I’ve seen enough of them to know that they’re great girls (yes, even Rebecca) who’d be a ball to hang out with and invaluable to have as friends. Woe to people who try to go head-to-head with the might of ZBZ! Plus, the ZBZs get to hang out with the Kappa Tau’s more than the Omega Chi’s these days – hell yeah!

Personally, I’d love to be a mate of Cappie’s, but I’m a firm Casey/Cappie supporter (how could I not be?!) so I wouldn’t want to get in the way of those two crazy kids’ meant-to-be-ness. Ah, to be Greek.

  19. Kayla on August 4th, 2009 9:29 pm

I probably couldn’t handle being a ZBZ. As much as I love Casey and Rebecca, I don’t think I could deal with the inevitable drama. (Though I would totally be best friends with Ashleigh!!)

KT, again as much as I love the whole gang, parties entirely too much for my taste. Plus I couldn’t live with that much sheer mess around.

So my ideal choice would be Omega Chi (you know, if frats let in girls). I’m an academic, definitely could use all the networking benefits, would love to be friends with Calvin, and I have no problem with argyle or whatever the preppy boys are wearing these days.

  20. Grant on August 4th, 2009 9:42 pm

baby you know I am an Kappa Tau. Because I like to party..

  21. Emily on August 4th, 2009 9:49 pm

    ZBZ, post Frannie

  22. Jen (HIMYM) on August 4th, 2009 9:59 pm

    -Michelle-
It’s a frat but maybe you’d be into (copied from wiki):

    Psi Phi Pi
A fraternity full of geeks (as noted by their name, phonetically sounding like sci-fi). Lizzie arranges a ZBZ mixer with this fraternity, and it is up to Ashleigh to get them out of it, only she falls for their social chair Jason, until Casey points out he’s Travis in a nerd suit.

    Erica
This is also a frat but it’s the jock frat, so you may feel comfortable:

Lambda Sigma Omega aka Lambda Sig
A jock fraternity who make up the vast majority of the school’s athletic teams. Lambda Sig is the second most popular fraternity after Omega Chi. When it comes time to establish which fraternity ZBZ is going to pref with, they get tired of waiting for O Chi to make up their mind (and thus define them), and decide to pref with the Lambda Sig’s instead.

My 1st pick would be ZBZ because while on the outside it appears to be all pink, girly and shallow, deep down they are girls that really care about each other.

My 2nd pick would be Gamma Psi Alpha since they are the second best sorority on campus. Though I would make sure not to taunt Rebecca because she would check me as if she was a linebacker!

And my 3rd pick would be a Tri Pi. Cappie has had his time with their entire sisterhood and if that is all it takes to be a Tri Pi, I’m down with that!

  23. Jessica Rae on August 4th, 2009 10:03 pm

I would pledge ZBZ because even if there’ some snobby girls in the mix (like Franny) there’s the chance to meet some really great gal pals like Casey and Ashleigh! And sharing clothing would be a lot of fun. I’ve never had sisters that were my age and I was really close with, so I’d really love that sense of family.

The fact that the ZBZ’s probably have one of the cleanest houses on campus is a nice perk, I don’t want to live knee-depth in moldy pizza boxes!

  24. Shannon on August 4th, 2009 10:51 pm

Is this even a choice?! 🙂 I would be a Kappa Tau for the proximity to Cappie alone! Not to mention the best parties, and the apparent ability to never have to go to class! Thanks for the contest. Huge fan of the show. Just converted 2 friends, working on another, and my sister! Would love to win.

  25. Marc on August 4th, 2009 11:03 pm

I started college with the same mindset (towards greek life, that is) as Dale. Then, my junior year, a friend convinced me to pledge a fraternity very similar to Omega Chi. I wouldn’t have it any other way, but I had gone to Cyprus Rhodes, I’d prefer to pledge Kappa Tau, and not just because I have the biggest man crush on BEAVER!!!!

  26. mackenzie on August 4th, 2009 11:50 pm

i would pledge ZBZ of course! even though i’m not much of a girly-girl, i think joining ZBZ would help me branch out and make some really good friends.

  27. Sarah on August 4th, 2009 11:59 pm

Well I’m supposed to pick ZBZ because I’m a girl, but I’ve done the whole uptight networking schtick and this time I would pick something like Kappa Tau!! I’m basically a Rusty, and I sooo could’ve used a Cappie to liven up my life!

  28. Alyssa on August 5th, 2009 12:30 am

I guess ZBZ. Casey kind of annoys me but I love Ashleigh and Rebecca. Whichever option gets me closer to Cappie!

  29. Katie on August 5th, 2009 2:07 am

I’m a girl, but I’d pledge Kappa Tau. They’re much more my speed… accepting of all their members, no matter how different they are and always up for a good time. Plus, their mid-afternoon nap fits my schedule and plus… who doesn’t love Cappie?!?!?!

  30. Tanya on August 5th, 2009 5:52 am

Whichever CRU sorority is closest to Kappa Tau 🙂

I love all this Cappie love <3

and thanks GMMR for the Greek love!! I feel very alone in my Greek obsession so it’s awesome to see it featured!

  31. Caroline on August 5th, 2009 8:33 am

Oh, how I love this show – I’ve been watching since the beginning, and sometimes it’s so close to my college Greek experience it’s chilling.

I think I’d have to try and pledge ZBZ, but in order to do so, I’d need to step into the way-back machine and reclaim my size-six, platinum blonde 18-year old body (haven’t seen it in a loooong time…I was more of a Betsy and less of a Casey in college). But second on my pref night card – probably Tri Pi. Because you know there would be frequent mixers with Cappie…

  32. Brett on August 5th, 2009 9:00 am

I’d go against my Dale-like self and rush Omega Chi Delta so I can party with the Zetas.

  33. Michelle on August 5th, 2009 9:23 am

I’m assuming I’m not limited to my gender specific sorority. I would love to pledge KT. They have the best parties and just look like they have so much fun. 🙂 🙂

  34. Jefferson on August 5th, 2009 9:42 am

Kappa Tau all the way. Why? For Cappie. Do I need another reason beyond that?

  35. Mattie B on August 5th, 2009 10:20 am

I’d say Kappa Tau, but the show kind of makes the Omega Chi’s look like asses all the time. Kappa Taus are always loyal and fun and crazy in a “This is a great story I’ll never be able to tell my kids” kind of way. The Omega Chis are all stuck-up and kind of just nasty to everyone (except Calvin, and apparently…Grant is his name? I’d love to hang out with them, but I might stare). Evan has his moments of being great when he’s not being a dick, but I’d still rather be friends with Cappie and Beaver, even if it meant I’d have to put up with Rusty.

Back when I was in college though I so would have wanted to be in Omega Chi though

  36. Elise on August 5th, 2009 11:50 am

If I could, I would definitely join the Kappa Taus. They are funny. They know how to have a good time. But mostly because they have Cappie! 🙂

  37. Remy on August 5th, 2009 4:08 pm

Oh man. Ok, I wasn’t going to enter, especially after seeing how many people responded. But I’m going to take my chances anyways.

I’d be in ZBZ. Not because it’s really the only sorority the audience is really exposed to (IKI doesn’t count. Everyone knows that. :P) I’d be in ZBZ because it reminds me of my college experience. I wasn’t in a sorority, for money reasons, but had I been able to rush there was a particular sorority on my campus I would have joined. ZBZ is like the fictional version of that sorority. The girls were amazing. They didn’t shun you if you weren’t Greek – they embraced everyone. When I had to deflect before pledge week, the president contacted me and offered up help to try to get me to change my mind so I could try pledging again the next year. That’s how sweet these girls were. All 4 years, I maintained a strong relationship with several of the girls. Oh sure, they had their drama. Girls slept with their sisters’ boyfriend (oh yes, totally Casey and Becks drama), girls quit when they didn’t like how things were being run, you had girls who thought they were privileged, etc. But the girls who were the real heart and soul of the sorority are the ones who managed to stay above the drama. It was the least sorority-like sorority on campus. That’s why I’d choose ZBZ – to me, ZBZ is that same sorority. The same stories, the same drama…but also the same girls that you WANT to be friends with. The girls who understand what sisterhood means, and love their sisters no matter what.

Wow, I got reaaaaaaally sentinmental, lol. But seriously, I mean every word.

  38. Sara on August 5th, 2009 8:24 pm

I’m a Cappie girl! (who isn’t?) 🙂 so I’d have to be Kappa Tau! Plus, they are so low key and just hang out. I studied engineering in college, so maybe Rusty could tutor me! And hanging with Beaver?! Fun!

  39. Chelsea on August 5th, 2009 10:18 pm

If I had to pledge I would chose ZBZ. But as to where I fit in, I would probably be a Dale. I wouldn’t want to be in a sorority necessarily, but I would still want the perks of hanging with people who are members and still get to party!
