What Happened to Alex Wong? SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE’s Season 7 Frontrunner Can’t Compete

July 7, 2010 by

If you’re a SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE fan on the East Coast, you may have already heard the upsetting news: Season 7 stand out Alex Wong is injured.

The former Miami City Ballet dancer, who gave up his position in the company to pursue his SYTYCD dream, hurt his Achilles tendon during rehearsal yesterday and is unable to compete in tonight’s (July 7) competition show, which is currently airing live.

Because of this, he will automatically be in the bottom three on Thursday.

If he isn’t cleared by the doctor to dance next week, he will be eliminated.

Wong, who is arguably season 7’s frontrunner, having wowed the judges with last Wednesday’s hip hop performance as well as the first week’s Sonya Tayeh contemporary piece, will break a lot of hearts if he does indeed have to withdraw.

We are praying for your speedy recovery, Alex. Get well!

Good vibes going out to him and his tendon!

I am really heartbroken right now. Alex is my favorite and was so looking forward to him dancing tonight. I really hope and pray and hope and pray that he can dance next week so he can come back and WIN this competition because he certainly has the ability to do it.

I’m really hoping that the injury is nothing too severe b/c I really don’t want Alex to jeopardize his future dance career in what ever style he ends up choosing after this competition, considering he’s ONLY 23! I’m hoping for the best! I really wish we could have had a chance to see his routine from this week. I’m crossing my fingers, praying, and sending A LOT of good vibes his way.

just as a reminder, in season 4, Jessica King was eliminated/withdrew due to injury…i can personally say i didn’t miss her, but losing Alex would be…gah! I don’t even have word for that…

btw, i just wanted to add. I agree with Michele. I’m hoping that for once the best dancer wins SYTYCD…

Heartbroken for Alex. He is really the best this season. What a tragedy if we don’t get to see him dance anymore.

I am so sad for Alex. He is a brilliant dancer and it has been so fun watching him dance on the show. I’ve been waiting for him since I saw him almost make it on the show 2 seasons ago. Although given this show’s history, I had no hope of him winning the competition. In the whole history of SYTYCD, the best dancer never wins. With the new format this season it’s so great to see dancers like Allison back. Maybe if Alex does eventually heal (I really pray he does) at least they can bring him back as an all-star.

I just walked in the door and turned on the tv to see what was happening, I cannot believe this is happening to Alex. Well, one says where there is success, there was adversity. Yes this totally stinks. He will recover and he will always shine and be on top. One bad injury like his one, may eliminate him from the show, but I’m certain this won’t be his last great performance and he will surely move forward in the end….and probably in ways he never expects. Best wishes tonight for a speedy recovery. Rest, relax, and believe! M.

If Alex is gone I don’t have much desire to watch the show anymore. He was the one who got me back into watching after losing enthusiasm over the last few seasons! Billy is a great dancer, and Kent probably will be in a few years, but Alex is the one with the heart, soul, technique, and drive that gets a fellow dancer so excited! All my good energy goes out to Alex and prayers that the worst case scenario does not happen. Please please come back next week!!

I am so disappointed that I couldn’t see him dance. I couldn’t watch the rest of the show. If he is eliminated, I will not continue to watch the program. I am so frustrated for him! Ugh!

By the way, HULU has Season 7 episodes of SYTYCD. They’ve got the episode where Alex dances hip-hop.

Screw the rules…give him the trophy right now. He’s already proven he’s the best dancer on the show this season. Get well, Alex…your fans are behind you 100%

Nigel: “Are you hurting?” Alex: “Only in my heart…” Alex, we, whom you have inspired with your brilliance, and warmed with your smile, and entertained with your great dancing… we hurt with you and share your pain. I pray for healing for you.

How crazy that he couldn’t do the show last season because the ballet company feared injury…he comes on this season with the best intentions…and then THIS? WTF??? No fair!

First lets say Alex, you are amazing and I’d be honored to pay any price to see you dance again. With that said Please Heal yourself and know that this fan and many more will be looking for you so that we can see you dancing again.

Unfortunately, Alex is going to be out for the season. A ruptured achilles is a minimum of 6 months to recover and 1 year before any athletic activity. It will require surgery and months of recovery and physical therapy. There are no short-cuts for this injury. You might be able to reduce recovery by 2 or maybe 3 months with extremely aggressive (and possibly risky) recovery techniques.

I know because I am currently recovering from a right achilles tendon rupture. I’m 3 weeks post operation with several months to go. I had the same injury to my left achilles 10 years ago. Both of my injuries occurred playing basketball.

Good luck to Alex. It will be a long (and painful) process – especially since his career depends on his recovery.

    – Billy

I cannot believe what had happened to Alex. I was so sad and cried my eyes out.

Alex, you are a brilliant dancer and wonderful person!!! You know that we care about you and we love you! Please get recovered quickly and get back to next season. Cannot wait to see you dance again. Your dance makes us happy and our hearts are with you!

In one of the show not to long ago this season 7 they were talking about childhood hero’s. Well I was a jazz dancer from the age of 5 so like most of them I really didnt have anyone to look to except my teacher. Much later no one as an adult until Travis Wall I thought no one could top him but then the first time we saw Alex Wong last season 6 I was wrong (sorry Travis)
I can not believe after everything that has happens to Alex now this and still has to have surgery and then go back and do it all over again to get back to where he was. Alex please please please go back I have done everything to try to get u to win and I will again Always!
I live in South Florida as well and if I could do ANYTHING to help, get him better I would! I cant stop crying I AM SO SORRY ALEX I LOVE YOU!
