ALMOST HUMAN: What You Need to Know About the New Fox Series

November 17, 2013 by

There are approximately one million new shows debuting this season*, and it’s going to get difficult to keep track of them all.

To help you out, for every new show, I’m going to basically create a hub of info on the day of the premiere — pilot photos, my quick take on the pilot (or what I’ve seen so far), what’s been written about it so far, and when you can watch it.

Next up, ALMOST HUMAN…

ALMOST HUMAN: Executive-produced by Emmy Award winner J.J. Abrams and creator J.H. Wyman and starring Michael Ealy, ALMOST HUMAN is a high-tech, high-stakes action drama set 35 years in the future, when police officers are partnered with highly evolved human-like androids. An unlikely partnership is forged when a part-machine cop (Urban) is forced to pair with a part-human robot (Ealy) as they fight crime and investigate a deeper cover-up in a futuristic new world. *Maybe not scientifically correct. But close enough.

Fox’s description: “ALMOST HUMAN takes place approximately 30 years in the future – when being a cop has only become a more dangerous job than it is today. Following an unprecedented increase in the crime rate, every police officer must partner with an android. This series follows the week-to-week missions of John Kennex, a detective and sole survivor of a devastating police ambush, and his robot partner, Dorian, as this buddy-cop duo solves cases and fight to keep the lid on dangerously evolved criminals in this futuristic landscape.”

My take: ALMOST HUMAN is one of the fall shows I’ve most been looking forward to. I’ve only seen the pilot, but I found it beautifully done. It’s loaded with a ton of potential for what can be explored, both with characters and the world that is immediately established.

So much of what works falls on Michael Ealy (Dorian), whose portrayal of Dorian — an android — feels nuanced and layered, versus a joke, and it helps he has an easy chemistry with his co-star Karl Urban (John Kennex). I’ve loved what ALMOST HUMAN creator/former FRINGE showrunner J.H. Wyman has had to say about humanity in the past, so I’m really hopeful about this show.
