THE VOICE Top 5: Behind-the-Scenes at the iTunes Recording Session

December 10, 2013 by

While THE VOICE contestants have to get on stage every Monday night and sing their hearts out with the hopes of getting your votes, there’s another key factor — the iTunes recording session.

Every week, the contestants go to a recording studio in Burbank, where they record their iTunes version of the song they’ll sing live for the next round of THE VOICE.

THE VOICE’s top 5 spoke with reporters late last week while they were recording their songs about what they were singing, their recording studio experiences, and whether they preferred tackling one song or two…

On his song, "Shameless": "Me and Blake, during last week's rehearsal, Blake gave me a guitar, and said, 'I remember watching that Garth Brooks special, he had that documentary, and I wanted one so bad.' And I was like, 'Yeah, I used to watch that special when I was a little kid.' I really did, I used to watch it over and over again. It was one of the first things I used to watch that made me want to be on stage. And we just talked about that for a second and I said, 'I remember when he did 'Shameless' and he just stood there pulling that rose apart.' And he was like, 'Yeah.' And I was like, ''Shameless' would be a good one.' And he was like, 'Hell yeah, man!' He texted me about it saying he was really excited about it and he really wanted to do it and he was on board. I think it's good to do some country because I think I may be the only one out of the five of us that can do country, or is not afraid to do country. Will [Champlin] might be a close second. I feel like country is in my roots. I know how many country fans love the show, and they're not getting country anywhere. I'm honored to do country without shoving it down their throats."

On doing one song this week versus two: "I'm used to doing five-hour nights where I'm singing 100 songs, and it's like, if they don't like this song, I have this song to show them, or I can make them like this one. That's what I really liked having two songs [last week]: if they don't like 'Rich Girl,' maybe they'll like 'Better Man.' And if they didn't like 'Better Man,' hopefully they'll like 'Rich Girl.' I prefer having multiple songs. I guess it's easier on learning lyrics and memorizing things [to do one]. I guess it's good to have one song to focus on. But I would much rather -- I like the multiple song thing. when they told us we were only doing one song this week, I was bummed. I was like, 'Aw, man!' But it's cool."
