After 13 seasons of playing Dean Winchester—albeit, sometimes with a demonic twist—SUPERNATURAL star Jensen Ackles faced a new hurdle when he had to portray Michael (in Dean’s body) to kick off season 14.

“It was difficult,” he told reporters in the video below. “It wasn’t just difficult because [I’m] playing a different character—the challenge was playing this different character in the environment I’ve been playing Dean for the past 13 years…usually when I step on to the soundstage and see all those faces, I instantly get transformed into Dean. It’s like hitting a button; Dean-mode. And to A) not do that, and B) do something opposite of that, it was challenging. It was difficult. But it was one of those challenges I gladly accepted. ‘Okay, I’m going to take this as a challenge and work hard, and hopefully succeed.'”

With Michael on his own mission this season, Ackles acknowledged he “didn’t necessarily need to know about his plan.” What he did want, however, was “a sense of tonally how they wanted him to be played. I had a brief conversation with [executive producer] Andrew [Dabb], and he gave me a couple of very small notes.”

Check out more from Ackles, as he discussed the challenges of also having to do a scene in a new language, and more…
