[Warning: This post contains spoilers for the CHICAGO FIRE season finale, “51’s Original Bell.”]

CHICAGO FIRE’s unexpected season finale found Capp (Randy Flagler) at risk when a call-gone-awry led to an injury that put his career at risk. Thankfully, the scare was short-lived and he was able to recover.

The hour’s other big question mark was Foster (Annie Ilonzeh), who reapplied to Northwestern’s medical school, and made her case to a panel why she should be allowed back. But what does that mean for her future with Firehouse 51? “Stay tuned,” FIRE boss Derek Haas said via email. (Update: Ilonzeh is exiting the series.)

With the season shut down prematurely due to the coronavirus—and the next three seasons already ordered—”I think we’re going to take what we were going to do in the final three episodes and rethink them to fit the start of a season rather than the end of a season,” Haas said. “Feels like we have a leg up getting going for next year! ”

Speaking of season 9, though Brett (Kara Killmer) has had her share of heartbreak in recent episodes, including the loss of her birth mother, it seems there is still some choppy water ahead. “We did throw a lot at her in the second half of this season,” Haas said. “And…you know what? We’re gonna take it up a notch from there next season!  (Evil laugh.)”

Elsewhere, “
I think the Girls on Fire program has a great storyline coming for Kidd that we didn’t get to finish,” he continued. “And I think we’ll continue to see the different ‘generations’ for the lack of a better word at the firehouse next year.  It is fun to play with the ‘old dogs’ versus ‘young guns’ dynamic.”

CHICAGO FIRE, Wednesdays, 9/8c, NBC
