CHICAGO FIRE: Taylor Kinney on Stellaride’s Latest Relationship Hurdle

CHICAGO FIRE’s Stella (Miranda Rae Mayo) and Severide (Taylor Kinney) hit a major relationship hiccup in recent episodes, as Severide became worried about the perception that their relationship was helping her move up the ladder—but he didn’t want to hurt her feelings and tell her about the gossip. Naturally, Stella didn’t react well to her long-time boyfriend pulling back.

“I don’t think it’s too dissimilar from things in the past…it’s a matter of communication,” Kinney told reporters in the video below during the (virtual) One Chicago Day junket. “It’s kind of Stella who [eventually] shakes the tree, and she’s like, ‘Snap out of it. What’s wrong with you?'”

Kinney has sympathy for Severide, explaining, that the fix will have to be “him getting out of his own way. Because I think he gets stuck upstairs sometimes where, even if there’s the best of intentions, they seem to fall by the wayside…Stella usually helps ground him.”

But he isn’t worried that this will be a breaking point for the duo (who may have some big things on the horizon). “Not only do they live together, they work together, and…no one’s sick of each other; they enjoy each other’s company, so there’s really no reason not to be on the same page,” he said. “So I think that’s the frustration and that’s what causes any friction that they have.”
