On the Tuesday, April 20 episode of PRODIGAL SON, a deeply disturbing murder quickly becomes connected to one of the team’s own.

“We’re going to find out a little more about Edrisa’s after-work life and her after-work hobbies and obsessions, because she’s a bit of an obsessive person,” Keiko Agena, who plays Edrisa, says with a laugh. “And just might be tied up with some [murder].”

In fact, Edrisa is part of an online vigilante group, known as the Killabustas, who have taken it upon themselves to solve crimes the police don’t have the bandwidth to tackle.

“Even though Edrisa’s a medical examiner, she still can’t get enough of solving crimes just through her work life,” Agena acknowledges. “She is obsessed with connecting with people who also want to solve crimes, and may not necessarily stick to law-abiding means. And so this, of course, kind of bleeds into her work life, as well.”

The inspiration for the group came from the writers’ own obsession with true-crime documentaries and the amateur sleuthing that led to real results.

“Very early on this season, a lot of our writers were very intrigued by that HBO documentary, I’LL BE GONE IN THE DARK about the Golden State Killer and [the Netflix series] DON’T F— WITH CATS,” PRODIGAL SON co-creator Sam Sklaver says. “So we kept talking about these online vigilantes and how close it was to our world and how Bright would probably respect them. And then we were like, ‘You know what? Edrisa would definitely be one.’ And right there we knew we had an episode where we could see her crime-solving group the Killabustas [get involved]. And whenever we can focus in another member of the police force, it’s always exciting…Keiko’s so funny in it, and touching and it’s just so good. We’re so lucky to have Keiko on our merry team.”

“It gives us an opportunity to explore who Edrisa is as a character,” adds co-creator Chris Fedak. “So often we don’t have time in our cases to get into each one of our characters, so the way we build [the season so] we have specific episodes [where] we try to get focused in on each character each year. And so when it came to Keiko, we knew we were wanting to focus in on this.”

And it won’t be just the case getting center stage.

“We also like to see what her life looks like, and see her relationships and also maybe have a love interest situation,” Fedak teases.
