When LAW & ORDER returns for its 21st season in 2022, two of its original stars are onboard: Sam Waterston (who portrayed Executive Assistant District Attorney/District Attorney Jack McCoy for 16 seasons) and Anthony Anderson (who portrayed Detective Kevin Bernard for three seasons).

They aren’t the only performers from the final season of the iconic series who will have ties to mega-producer Dick Wolf‘s current TV slate: S. Epatha Merkerson, who portrayed Lieutenant Anita Van Buren, is starring on CHICAGO MED; FBI stars Jeremy Sisto (who portrayed Detective Cyrus Lupo) and Alana De La Garza (who portrayed Assistant District Attorney Connie Rubirosa).

And while the CHICAGO shows are interconnected with the LAW & ORDER franchise—via previous crossovers with L&O spinoff SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT—the FBI franchise is also tied to that world via a one-time crossover between CHICAGO P.D. and FBI.

“[LAW & ORDER Thursdays is] creating countless opportunities for fan favorite crossovers, and that’s across all three series,” Susan Rovner, Chairman, Entertainment Content, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, told reporters during a conference call to discuss the winter premieres. “Not to mention the potential to bring in some CHICAGO visitors from our Wednesday night lineup.”

But could CBS’ FBI possibly join that crossover mix at some point, especially with two former L&O stars currently leading that series? (FBI showrunner Rick Eid—who previously ran CHICAGO P.D. and SVU—is also running the LAW & ORDER revival.)

“That’d be awesome,” Sisto says with a laugh. “I should play both [of my] characters! That would be something…I think it would be great if there was this really weird scene where Jubal was going into the restroom, and he looked up and at the next urinal it was Cyrus and we have some strange scene: ‘Hey, don’t I know you from somewhere?’ I don’t know why we have to be in the men’s room—it just felt like a appropriate place for an absurd moment.”

Even if that particular surreal moment doesn’t come to pass, Sisto notes he’s game to play within the larger Wolf universe.

“Dick has mentioned to me in the past, ‘Oh, we’re working on a crossover with [FBI and LAW & ORDER:] SVU,'” he shares. “But that hasn’t come to fruition yet. With the new LAW & ORDER, it’s very exciting. I just talked to Anthony and he’s loving it. And Rick is really excited. So it’s fun. I love that it’s continued on; it gives me hope that [FBI] can go on for more than 20 years.”

LAW & ORDER, Premiere, Thursday, February 24, 8/7c, NBC
