THE ROOKIE is doing a spiritual sequel to its format-busting season 3 installment “True Crime” in 2022.

“We’re going to do another true crime documentary episode, which was my favorite thing last season to do—and not just because I was the off-camera narrator/interviewer,” THE ROOKIE showrunner Alexi Hawley previews. “I just love deconstructing the show that way. I love deconstructing the true crime documentaries that we’re all addicted to—a lot of them on Netflix. So what was fun about that first one was not only was it a cult documentary, but also a serial killer documentary—just to play with all the different formats. So we’re definitely leaning into how can we do that again, and in a different, but fun way.”

While Hawley was coy about the exact details of the hour, he did tease “given that [Tru Valentino’s] Aaron Thorsen has his own true crime history, that there might be a little to storytelling about that.”

And while the characters might not be thrilled to have the spotlight on one of their own, there were be some internal drama to deal with as the union representative election plays out.

“We’re going to [show] election day,” Hawley says of an upcoming episode. “Part of the reason we did the storyline was that police unions are incredibly problematic. And so in our story of policing, it is an issue. And the things that are wrong that very strong police unions and what matters to them are definitely an issue. So we felt like—even though it’s a fun story—it’s a way to ultimately talk about stuff that matters in a little bit of an inside baseball way, which we love to do. The union story keeps going.”

Whether Nolan (Nathan Fillion) ends up winning the union rep spot or not, he’ll have his hands full with his personal life. In addition to Bailey’s (Jenna Dewan) secret husband Jason (Steve Kazee) throwing things into chaos, “we’re trying to get Pete Davidson back [as Nolan’s brother],” Hawley teases.
