AMERICA'S GOT TALENT, THE CHALLENGE USA, SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE: Host Cat Deeley (C) announces America’s favorite dancer Contestant Alexis (L) with Contestant Keaton (R) on SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE airing Wednesday, August 3 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. ©2022 Fox Media LLC. CR: Ray Mickshaw/FOX

Let’s talk about Wednesday night’s TV!

AMERICA’S GOT TALENT: Yeah, I hate this elimination format. I actually agreed with the top 5, and the top 3 were great, but that was too many damn good acts that are gone from the competition. Not to mention, some of what makes these shows great is seeing how they hold up, act-wise, when they have to compete multiple times in the live shows before reaching the finale.

(Look, all of the top 5 acts were deserving and incredible, but it’s not the best optics that every single person on that stage was male…)

MASTERCHEF: Emily, I’m with you…I’m not a fan of spicy food, either. As much as I’d struggle with most challenges, I’d be absolutely awful at this. And incorporating 11 ingredients seems like such a mess.

I feel bad for Bri, because she did have such a good week with the group outing, but it was clear the judges were wildly unimpressed with her dish. (It’s sad that hers is the one I felt I was probably the most likely to actually enjoy; but, again, given my preference for things to be not spicy, that’s probably not a ringing endorsement.)

PASSWORD: It felt like there were harder words tonight (things that should take at least two clues), and so it was a bit more messy. But it was still fun! And with neither contestant getting it all in Alphabetics, it was good to learn about a new level of the show: a second-chance one-off clue, which allows the contestant to double the money they won. It’s a fun twist!

(But, also, Heidi’s dancing made me nervous. I get she was nervous, but I absolutely would have been distracted if she was doing that while I was trying to deliver clues.)

THE CHALLENGE USA: Sarah losing her mind over this “betrayal” sure is something. It’s…a game. But also: Desi and David won this week?! Wow. I did not see that coming.

I’m bummed for Shannon and Derek. It’s really kind of awful they were targeted because Shannon revealed she was hurt? Like, yes, in hindsight, absolutely not the smart move, but it’s weird for David to take that shot, when Derek probably would have protected him. (And it also guaranteed a BIG BROTHER person would be going home.)

But, man, Kyra is SO LUCKY no one realized she was that ill. You’d think her DQing during the challenge would have been a hint…

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE: I’ve been a broken record on this, but the fact that fans at home got no opportunity to vote the entire season is depressing and not what the show should be.

And, again, to be clear, this is not about the winner/results; I suspect Alexis would have won no matter what. But this isn’t something like THE MASKED SINGER where you’re competing for a trophy and the title. This could be someone’s career. This is life-changing money. It would have been nice to give the audience the illusion they had any say in this.

All that being said, Alexis had a great finale. Keaton was strong—and arguably had to go much further out of his comfort zone—and I’m not sure if I would have been upset either outcome, frankly. Both were strong dancers, but I absolutely understand why the audience in the studio voted the way they did.

IF the show comes back, I truly hope they do a serious look at what worked this year and what didn’t. (No voting and part of the judging panel not being equipped, at all, for this show.)
