Chris Carter Says The Potential THE X-FILES Reboot Will ‘Pay Homage’ to the Original Series

Back in March, THE X-FILES creator Chris Carter made the surprise announcement that the franchise was potentially on the verge of being revived by Ryan Coogler.

While details were scarce at the time, a source confirmed Coogler’s new take was not being developed for Fox. Additionally, the intention is for the new story to be centered around a diverse cast.

Months have passed since the last tidbit, and things in the industry have drastically changed as both the WGA and SAG-AFTRA went on strike. But in a recent conversation with Fangoria, Carter offered up a few more details about the possible return of THE X-FILES.

“I had a conversation with [Coogler] and he was raring to go—and then the Writers Guild strike hit,” Carter said. “And he was handcuffed by that. As far as I know, that is still happening. It would happen with a diverse cast. He had some very interesting ideas when we spoke…But I’ll be right there with the rest of the audience, hopefully.”

The original series starred David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as Agents Mulder and Scully—a believer and a skeptic, respectively, who investigated the unknown—and ran on Fox from 1993-2002. The franchise also included two feature films (in 1998 and 2008), as well as revival seasons in 2016 and 2018. (The series also celebrated its 30th anniversary over the weekend.)

With 218 episodes (and the movies) to the franchise’s name, Carter acknowledged in March that Coogler’s “got his work cut out for him because we covered so much territory.”

Now, Carter elaborated that the new take on THE X-FILES would have “some element that would be completely new.”

But, “I think it has to pay homage to THE X-FILES, generally, because the concept is kind of set in stone,” Carter said. “And…if you’re going to call it THE X-FILES, I don’t think you can necessarily launch it as a completely new entity.”
