A country club wedding leads to the death of the groom on the Thursday, May 2 episode of ELSBETH…and Elsbeth (Carrie Preston) has her suspicions about the father of the bride, Ashton Hayes (Keegan-Michael Key).

Naturally, Elsbeth and Kaya (Carra Patterson) are on the case. When filming the episode, Patterson was balancing two different emotions: “I mean, Carra the actress is trying hard not to fangirl over all these amazing guest stars that we have,” she tells Give Me My Remote with a laugh. But on-screen, “that’s a really fun episode.”

“There’s a really fun treat in store with Elsbeth and Keegan[‘s character] that episode,” Patterson previews. “I don’t want to tease too much. But I think Kaya…she’s on the ride. She knows that when Elsbeth hooks into someone, she’s willing to go on the ride. And I think she goes on a really fun ride with Keegan’s character on the next one.”

Key is just the latest in an impressive ELSBETH guest star roster, which has included Stephen Moyer, Jane Krakowski, Linda Lavin, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Retta, Blair Underwood, and Gina Gershon.

“It’s been a great honor,” Patterson says of working opposite the season 1 guest stars. “This has been such a gift and a dream come true, as an artist to work with [these actors]. I mean, my immediate day-to-day ensemble is amazing. The celebrity guest stars are all amazing.”

“There have been times me and Wendell [Pierce, who plays Captain Wagner] are sitting in the greenroom, and we’re just, like, asking a bunch of questions [to that week’s guest star],” she continues. “One of our guest stars, I could tell they were nervous about their lines [before filming]; they were like, ‘I want to finish this conversation, but I need to work on my lines.’ And [it’s], ‘Oh, right, even though [you’re] super-famous, you’re nervous about your scene that’s coming up. Let’s give you that space.’ So it’s really great to see how different artists work.”

Patterson credits the show for drawing in such an eclectic group of guest stars. “This is a really fun show that I think a lot of people are craving right now,” she says. “It’s kind of the best of both worlds: You get this juicy procedural and murder mystery, but then we kind of make fun of ourselves and don’t take it too seriously at the same time. And it’s just a win-win for so many audiences—and I’m feeling the same way on set.”

ELSBETH, Thursdays, 10/9c, CBS
