THE MOLE and its Subliminal Messages Return

May 2, 2008 by

THE MOLE on ABCRemember that episode of SAVED BY THE BELL when the students of Bayside High learned about subliminal advertising and then Zack, being the prankster that he is, used the same subliminal techniques to get Kelly Kapowski to go to the dance with him? Yeah? Well then you might have noticed similar methods being employed by ABC over the past few months. Well, they weren’t trying to get us to go to the dance with them but it’s the same idea.

Right after the credits end of some of our favorite ABC shows, the network has been flashing a super quick adverts for the new season of the reality show THE MOLE. Of course ABC wouldn’t be as bold to call it subliminal advertising. They prefer the euphemism ‘flash teases’. Either way, I saw them and I’m talking about them so I guess they’ve done their job.

The flash teases told us THE MOLE was returning to ABC but until today the deets were unknown. ABC just alerted the press that THE MOLE will premiere on Monday, June 2nd from 10-11pm ET. Former host of THE MOLE, Anderson Cooper (nope, I’m not kidding) has a slightly better gig these days so he’s turning his hosting duties over to Jon Kelley from EXTRA.

For those of you who don’t remember, THE MOLE is a game in which players must complete various physical and mental challenges to build up a significant cash prize for the winner. One of them, however, is “the Mole,” a double agent hired by the producers to sabotage the efforts of the group. The Mole must be careful to avoid drawing suspicion. Using journals, players must track vast amounts of minutiae about the person(s) they suspect of being the Mole, such as seating positions, clothing colors, minor discussion topics, and so on. The quiz at the end of each episode tests players’ knowledge of the Mole, and determines by lowest score who is eliminated from the game.

There will be 12 players this season, and four have just been announced: Kristen (Santa Monica, CA), Victoria (Bishop, TX), Clay (Philadelphia, PA) and Paul (Yonkers, NY).

I must say, as far as reality-based game shows go, this one is actually pretty interesting. It’s a little bit of SURVIVOR and THE AMAZING RACE with a little bit of whodunit thrown in for good measure. Pretty interesting and addictive because we get to play along at home.

I’ll be watching. Want to watch with me?

I’m guessing Anderson Cooper is gonna pass on hosting this season.

Hard to believe he went from hosting the mole to serious news guy on CNN.

I watched it before but got super into the Celebrity Mole. It was my freshman year of college and we’d all cram into a room to watch it and fight over who was and wasn’t the mole. I remember thinking it was the Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper guy. I’m pumped for this.

I absolutely love The Mole and am SO excited it’s been coming back. Ever since it went off the air, I’ve been telling people how awesome it was. Even the sub-par Celebrity editions were still pretty good. I watched all four seasons and loved it. When I saw those flashes between commercials, I almost peed my pants.

The Mole was the first reality show I watched and it was a great concept. I have the first season on DVD just so I can love on Anderson Cooper! I don’t care that he’s “alledgedly” gay….LOL

I loved that episode of Saved by the Bell!

More relevantly, I also loved The Mole. These subliminal messages have gotten me excited. It’s so much fun to see them while watching other ABC shows.

And Anderson Cooper was such an awesome host. I’m happy for him that he’s moved on to much bigger things, but I missed him during the celebrity editions.

I’ll be watching. My dad and I used to watch it all the time. We never went crazy with all the TiVo-ing through the credits to catch frames of clues, but we did keep a sharp eye out. The best part of the Mole was that, compared to all of the other reality shows that were out at that time (like Survivor and Amazing Race), this show really treated its contestants well and put them up in nice places and always accomodated them. It didn’t depress you when you saw the contestants in bad conditions.

But nowadays, anything can be a reality show (including who can live the most luxuriously), so I’m curious to see what else it can bring to the table now.
